Job Title: Hardware Architect – Naval Systems (Frigate Projects)
Location: UK-Based – Hybrid/Flexible Working Options

Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Hardware Architect to play a key role in the design and delivery of complex electronic and electromechanical systems for frigate-class naval platforms . This role is critical to shaping the next generation of maritime systems, with a focus on radar , sonar , and integrated mission systems. The ideal candidate will bring deep hardware engineering experience, particularly in combat systems , naval electronics , and obsolescence management within the defence domain.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the hardware architecture design and integration for frigate platforms , ensuring alignment with naval and customer requirements.
- Define system-level and sub-system-level hardware architecture for radar, sonar, and mission-critical electronics .
- Work closely with multi-disciplinary teams including systems, mechanical, software, and safety engineers to ensure a cohesive design approach.
- Conduct obsolescence risk assessments , mitigation strategies, and roadmap planning to ensure hardware longevity and availability.
- Support platform-level trade studies , technology selections, and integration decisions.
- Produce high-quality design documentation including interface control documents, architecture definitions, and system block diagrams.
- Engage with suppliers and subcontractors to specify, select, and evaluate COTS and bespoke hardware components.
- Provide technical support to bid activities, design reviews, and customer engagements .
- Proven experience as a Hardware Architect or Senior Hardware Engineer in the defence or maritime sector .
- Strong knowledge of frigate or surface ship combat systems , particularly with sonar and radar technologies.
- Expertise in digital and/or analogue hardware design , COTS integration, and environmental constraints for naval environments.
- Experience with obsolescence management tools, methodologies, and lifecycle planning.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and technical leadership skills.
- Understanding of Def Stan , MIL-STD , or similar military/aerospace standards.
- Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or related discipline.
- Experience working directly with UK MOD, DE&S, or major naval primes.
- Familiarity with tools such as Altium, OrCAD, Zuken, or similar.
- Knowledge of platform integration and testing processes for naval systems.
- Security Cleared (SC or DV).
