I’m hiring for a Frontend‑focused Engineer to join a growing, ambitious technology team working in the drug discovery sector. This is a hands‑on individual contributor role with a strong emphasis on user experience, visual quality, and frontend execution, contributing to software used in a real‑world, regulated environment.

This role suits someone who identifies as an engineer first, but has a strong eye for design and usability. The focus is not on backend systems or cloud infrastructure, but on shaping how a complex technical product looks, feels, and is experienced by specialist users.

Modern, AI‑assisted development is actively encouraged. You won’t be expected to hand‑write every line of code, but you will be expected to understand, read, and reason about frontend code, guide AI‑generated implementations, and make sound technical and UX decisions.

The Role

  • Improve and evolve the frontend of an existing, complex application
  • Shape user experience and interface quality for scientific and technical users
  • Design and implement UI changes, or guide AI‑assisted implementations, with strong usability standards
  • Read, review, and validate frontend code to ensure correctness, maintainability, and performance
  • Work closely with engineers and scientific stakeholders to translate technical requirements into effective interfaces
  • Apply strong judgement around browser behaviour, frontend constraints, and UX trade‑offs
  • Operate as a senior‑minded individual contributor (this is not a people‑management role)

Required Experience

  • A solid background in frontend engineering, with the ability to understand and assess modern frontend codebases
  • Prior experience working in scientific, healthcare, life‑sciences, or similarly technical domains, with an understanding of the demands of complex, data‑heavy products
  • Strong awareness of user experience and visual design, even if not formally a designer
  • Experience building or improving interfaces for complex or specialist tools
  • Comfort adopting AI‑assisted development workflows, with the ability to assess and guide generated code
  • Good understanding of browser behaviour, frontend limitations, and usability considerations
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across technical and non‑technical disciplines

Seniority & Working Style

  • Open to mid‑level through senior / lead‑level IC profiles
  • Hybrid working model with 2 days per week on site
  • Flexible working hours
  • Emphasis on ownership, judgement, and execution quality over specific frameworks or titles

Who This Suits

  • This role will suit someone who enjoys building high‑quality user experiences for complex, scientific software
  • Is comfortable operating at the intersection of engineering and UX
  • Wants to embrace modern, AI‑enabled ways of building software
  • Prefers hands‑on contribution over people management or product ownership

The company cannot offer visa sponsorship so candidates must have full, permanent right to work in the UK. Sadly we cannot accept short term visas like PSW or Graduate.
