A leading defence and engineering organisation is seeking an experienced Product Safety Engineer to support safety assurance activities across complex systems and platforms. This role is ideal for someone with strong MOD project experience and deep knowledge of product and system safety engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support product safety activities across the full engineering lifecycle.
- Facilitate hazard and risk identification, analysis, evaluation, and management.
- Produce safety artefacts including Safety & Environmental Management Plans, Hazard Logs, Safety Case Reports, and supporting analyses (FMEA, FTA/ETA, Functional Failure Analysis).
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, and standards.
- Embed safety requirements from early design phases and maintain them throughout development.
- Act as the safety point of contact for project teams, collating evidence and ensuring timely delivery of safety documentation.
- Provide safety input to design reviews, bid activity, and project committees.
- Escalate safety concerns to senior safety authorities where required.
- Support estimation, planning, and reporting of safety work packages.
- Peer‑review safety artefacts produced by other engineers.
Skills & Experience Required
- Technical
- Strong background in Product and System Safety Engineering.
- Proven experience delivering safety activities on MOD or defence‑related projects (essential).
- Knowledge of relevant safety standards such as DEF Stan 00‑056, 00‑055, 00‑051, IEC 61508, JSPs, DSA02 or similar.
- Skilled in hazard identification, risk assessment and safety argument development.
- Understanding of lifecycle management and safety integration for large or complex platforms.
- Ability to accurately estimate and cost safety tasks.
- Strong problem‑solving and data analysis capability.
- Able to develop evidence‑based safety arguments.
- Excellent report writing and presentation skills.
- Flexible and adaptable approach.
Qualifications
- Relevant engineering qualification or equivalent experience in safety engineering.
- Membership of a professional body (desirable).
- Chartered or working towards Chartered status (desirable).
- Security Clearance (or ability to obtain) is essential.
Contract Details
- Initial 6‑month contract with potential extension.
- Based in Bristol with some travel to other UK sites as required.
