Role purpose/summary
The Monitoring & Logging Engineer designs, builds, and maintains observability capabilities across applications, infrastructure, and cloud platforms. The role ensures reliable log ingestion, actionable monitoring, and high-quality telemetry to support operations, incident response, and platform assurance.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitoring & Observability
- Implement and manage monitoring platforms such as Splunk, Elastic, Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, or similar tools.
- Build dashboards, alerts, and health checks for performance, availability, and reliability.
- Define monitoring standards and onboarding requirements for new services and platforms.
- Log Pipeline Engineering
- Develop and maintain log collection pipelines, including parsing, filtering, enrichment, and routing.
- Ensure consistent, compliant log ingestion from Servers, applications, and cloud services.
- Optimise data retention, indexing, and storage efficiency.
- Operational Support & Assurance
- Support troubleshooting and incident response through log analysis and metrics insights.
- Conduct platform tuning, optimisation, and capacity reviews.
- Identify monitoring gaps and implement improvements to strengthen observability.
- Collaboration & Integration
- Work with cloud, security, application, and operations teams to align monitoring with business needs.
- Integrate logging and monitoring with SIEM/SOAR and security tools for detection and response.
- Participate in incident reviews and help improve platform reliability.
- Documentation & Governance
- Create runbooks, onboarding guides, data dictionaries, and architecture diagrams.
- Ensure monitoring and logging meet compliance, audit, and governance standards.
Skills & Experience Required
- Experience with Splunk, Elastic, Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, or similar platforms.
- Strong understanding of log pipelines, event schemas, and telemetry design.
- Ability to build dashboards, alerts, and actionable insights.
- Experience supporting cloud or hybrid environments.
- Scripting (PowerShell, Python) is beneficial.
