Role Purpose
The English Teacher will be responsible for delivering high-quality, personalised English education to students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The role aims to ensure that all students, regardless of their starting point, are supported to develop confidence in communication, reading, writing, speaking and listening, functional literacy and, where appropriate, formal English qualifications at GCSE or Functional Skills level.
The post holder will plan and deliver engaging, differentiated and accessible lessons, informed by Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), and will work closely with teaching assistants, therapists and the wider multidisciplinary team to remove barriers to learning. Through a trauma-informed, inclusive and student-centred approach, the teacher will foster positive relationships, promote emotional regulation and behaviour for learning, and prepare students to make progress and achieve as far as possible.

Key Responsibilities:
Teaching & Learning
- Plan, deliver and evaluate high-quality, engaging and differentiated English lessons that meet the diverse needs of students with SEND.
- Adapt the English curriculum to ensure it is accessible, relevant and ambitious for all students, including those working significantly below age-related expectations.
- Deliver functional literacy and life-skills-based English alongside formal accreditation where appropriate, including GCSE English Language and Functional Skills English.
- Use a range of multi-sensory, practical and responsive teaching strategies to secure progress.
- Break down learning into small, achievable steps and celebrate progress in all its forms.
- Create a safe, structured and stimulating learning environment that promotes positive behaviour and emotional regulation.
Assessment, Progress & Outcomes
- Assess, monitor and record student progress using formative and summative assessment methods appropriate to a SEND setting.
- Set aspirational yet realistic targets in line with students’ assessed levels.
- Contribute to annual reviews, progress reviews and multi-agency meetings.
- Provide clear and accurate reports to parents/carers and senior leaders on attainment, progress and behaviour.
- Contribute to parent’s evenings and whole school events.
Behaviour, Wellbeing & Safeguarding
- Implement the school’s behaviour policy consistently, using positive behaviour support and de-escalation strategies.
- Implement the school’s merit and rewards system consistently.
- Support students’ emotional wellbeing and mental health through trauma-informed practice.
- Act as a safeguarding role model and follow all safeguarding and child protection procedures.
- Maintain high expectations for behaviour, inclusion and student dignity at all times.
Working with Others
- Work collaboratively with teaching assistants to plan, deliver and adapt learning.
- Liaise with SLT, peers, therapists, pastoral staff and external professionals to support student progress.
- Build positive, professional relationships with families and carers.
- Contribute to whole-school planning, review and development.
Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of SEND, English pedagogy and examination requirements.
- Engage in continuous professional development and reflective practice.
- Contribute to curriculum development and resource creation.
- Fulfil all professional duties in line with the Teachers’ Standards and the school’s policies.
- Carry out any other reasonable duties as directed by the Headteacher.
Supplementary Duties
·Candidates will be required to act as a form tutor.
·Candidates will be expected to deliver whole school assemblies related to a variety of subjects
·Candidates will be expected to contribute to whole school events upon request of the Headteacher
·Candidates will be expected to undertake additional duties as and when they arise, that may or may not be outside of their usual working hours/pattern, for example parent’s evenings and school trips.
