About the role

As an Electrical Support Specialist, I provide expert electrical, control, and instrumentation support to maintenance teams across the UK and Ireland, ensuring compliance with project plans, safety standards, and legislation. I oversee and contribute to the effective execution of maintenance and project works, maintaining high industry standards while maximising overall equipment effectiveness. My responsibilities include managing critical spares and national stock requirements, developing and improving maintenance procedures, and ensuring all work is properly controlled and documented to minimise risk. I carry out SCADA/DCS/PLC programming, fault finding, and repairs, assess breakdowns in line with safe systems of work, and produce detailed technical reports. I also define scopes of work for subcontractors and support technical decision-making through close collaboration with engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Use engineering principles including technical standards relating to the individual’s discipline to ensure efficient and safe plant operation.
  • Use of analytical problem-solving techniques.
  • Carry out fault finding and subsequent repairs to electrical, instrumentation and control equipment.
  • Use Root Cause Analysis techniques to diagnose and determine the causes of faults in depot, systems and components and ensure identified mitigations and corrective actions are implemented across the network.
  • Be the Maintenance team Subject Matter Expert & liaise with the technology team for decisions, procedures and standards applicable to the specific field of expertise.
  • Liaise with the Regional Maintenance Manager / Specialist / Supervisor with regard to maintenance issues.
  • Assist with continuous improvement activities and initiatives.
  • Assist with the production and review of maintenance processes, documentation and procedures in line with relevant standards & good practice.
  • Ensure third party contract maintenance works are appropriately controlled in accordance with the Exolum SSoW.
  • Assist Exolum stakeholders with Technical & Operational advice and support, assist with project completion where required.
  • Assist with compliance to company KPIs.
  • Look to continually improve personal development and undergo any training / re-training that may be required to ensure that the requirements of Exolum and competent authority procedures and statutory regulations are met.
  • Oversee major works and advise on technical specification requirements.
  • Ensure critical spares stock levels are adequately controlled and maintained.
  • Introduce standardised working practices across all Exolum sites.
  • Implement improvement programs and plans where required and ensure reliability and engineering standards are understood and adhered to at all times.
  • Work with the global teams to identify best working practices.
  • Work with the regional maintenance managers to develop site based teams for continuous improvement within the maintenance department.
  • Liaise with contractors and suppliers to obtain competitive quotes for equipment and work required on site.
  • Produce specific maintenance job methods and check sheets for standardised ways of working.
  • Liaise with sub-contractors to arrange and agree framework agreements.
  • Act as the coordinator / point of contact with other departments and sub-contractors during all major works.

About You

The successful candidate will be a time-served electrical technician with at least five years’ electrical maintenance experience and a relevant electrical apprenticeship, holding qualifications such as CompEx, 2394/2395, and 18th Edition IEE Regulations (BS7671). They will bring strong industrial experience with electrical equipment and systems, including carrying out electrical isolations, applying safe systems of work, and leading or contributing to maintenance teams. The role requires knowledge of electrical standards and regulations in the Chemicals, Oil and Gas sectors, alongside proven skills in fault-finding, system interrogation, and competent use of IT systems such as MS Office and CMMS tools like Maximo. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, capable of managing their own workload, calm under pressure, and able to communicate effectively at all levels. Desirable skills include holding an HND or HNC qualification, a recognised Health & Safety certification such as IOSH or NEBOSH, and having experience working on a COMAH Upper Tier site, ideally involving petroleum liquids and/or chemical environments.
