About the role
We are looking for an experienced and motivated HSSE Specialist to join our Northwest Europe HSSE team. This role plays a key part in supporting Health, Safety, Security and Environmental activities across the UK and Ireland, while also providing support to other countries within the Northwest Europe region as required.
The successful candidate will work closely with operational and regional teams to ensure compliance with HSSE legislation, company policies, procedures and industry best practice. You will support the integration and alignment of HSSE processes across the business, provide expert advice and guidance on a wide range of HSSE matters, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen our safety culture and environmental performance.
This is an exciting opportunity for a proactive individual who can manage multiple priorities, build strong stakeholder relationships and deliver practical solutions within a dynamic and evolving operational environment. You will also support regulatory compliance activities, audits, investigations, emergency preparedness programmes and key projects that drive HSSE excellence across the region.
Key Responsibilities:
- Understand the company HSSE policies, procedures and statutory requirements and assist with implementation.
- Provide advice on the preparation of risk assessments and method statements.
- Participate as requested in developing and instigating HSSE audits and inspections, Field Verifications, Terminal Safety Reviews, and site compliance visits.
- Manage sampling and monitoring activities, following company reporting protocols.
- Provide advice on the prevention of incidents.
- Assist HSSE programmes where gaps have been identified and implement subsequent improvement programmes.
- Assist in the preparation, implementation and delivery of training courses supporting HSSE procedural updates.
- Liaise with Competent Authority, HSE, EA/SEPA, other enforcing authorities and professional bodies, as required.
- Contribute to COMAH Safety Reports and lead on interventions, as appropriate as well as assisting in compliance with actions from interventions.
- Provide advice for obtaining legal consents, licenses, and exemptions such as discharge consents, abstraction licenses and environmental permits as required.
- Assist with implementing recommendations from Risk Assessments (general, qualitative, and quantitative), Land Quality Assessments (LQA) and Environmental Risk Assessments (ERA).
- Act as a champion across NWE for Safety Foundations initiatives.
- Support the incident recording, investigation, monitoring and escalation process.
- Apply Serious Injury and Fatality assessment of all incidents.
- Provide guidance on Human Factors and Safety Critical Task Assessment in investigations, assessments and continuous improvements in HSSE.
- Develop corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to prevent recurrence of incidents and near misses utilising the Hierarchy of Control.
- Assist on Emergency preparedness, response, and recovery activities.
- Monitor and coordinate corrective and preventative actions to closure.
- Progress Cost Benefit Analysis and Project proposals providing recommendations on value engineering and compliance with legislation and best practice.
- Lead or participate in projects for the betterment of HSSE across the region that may cover systems, processes, procedures, equipment, etc.
- Participate in monthly reporting activities, KPI collection and monitoring, team meetings, providing data to group and sharing best practice across the team and region.
About You
You will have previous experience in a dedicated HSSE role, ideally within a high-hazard or COMAH-regulated environment. You will possess a strong understanding of HSSE legislation, risk management principles and incident investigation techniques, along with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels of the organisation.
The ideal candidate will hold a NEBOSH General Certificate and/or Environmental Certificate (or equivalent), together with IOSH and/or IEMA membership and a valid UK driving licence. You will be an excellent communicator with strong analytical and problem-solving skills, capable of managing competing priorities while delivering results to demanding timescales.
Experience working within the oil, gas, petrochemical or similar industries would be advantageous, as would knowledge of human factors, environmental management, project delivery and regulatory engagement. Most importantly, you will be a resilient and collaborative team player with a proactive approach to driving HSSE performance and continuous improvement.
