We’re now looking for a Ranger to join our team on a permanent, full-time basis, working 37 hours per week on a rota basis, Monday to Sunday.

The Role

As a Ranger, you will provide a visible, uniformed, ambassadorial presence across Exmoor, helping residents and visitors enjoy, understand and protect its special qualities.

Specifically, you’ll develop and maintain strong working relationships with local communities, ensure excellent visitor experiences, and lead on maintaining and improving public rights of way and access networks.

In this varied and rewarding role, you will also support conservation and land management projects, run guided walks and activities, and work closely with volunteers, schools and under-represented groups.

Additionally, You Will

  • Inspect public paths, resolve issues and ensure accurate records are kept
  • Negotiate, plan and deliver repair and improvement projects
  • Tackle misuse and damage to paths and liaise with landowners and other agencies
  • Develop and deliver education and volunteer projects
  • Produce written materials and interpretation resources
  • Support conservation surveys, pony herd management and practical estate tasks
  • Collect information on issues affecting Exmoor’s special qualities and help identify solutions

About You

To be considered as a Ranger, you will need:

  • Experience in land management, recreation and education/interpretation
  • Knowledge and experience of practical application of PROW and countryside access legislation
  • Experience working with local communities, young people, volunteers and under-represented groups
  • Experience of managing volunteers and contractors
  • An understanding of Exmoor and the aims and purposes of the National Park
  • An understanding of Health & Safety legislation and risk assessments
  • Practical countryside and estate management skills
  • The ability to work independently and handle operational needs including evenings, weekends and bank holidays
  • The ability to travel across the National Park and interpret geographical information
  • A degree in Countryside Management or other relevant discipline, or equivalent experience
