Summary of the role:
We are seeking a highly analytical and business-focused Prompt Engineer with strong Insurance and Underwriting domain expertise to design, optimise, and govern GenAI‑driven underwriting assistants and AI workflows. This role will focus on developing high‑quality prompts for use cases including summarisation, risk insights, adverse media analysis, decision support, and underwriting assistant agents. The successful candidate will work closely with underwriters, SMEs, AI engineers, and data teams to translate complex underwriting processes into effective prompt logic and retrieval strategies. You will play a key role in improving response quality, reducing hallucinations, enhancing explainability and ensuring outputs are aligned with underwriting principles and business rules.
This position requires hands‑on experience with prompt engineering, LLM evaluation frameworks, RAG architectures, and Responsible AI practices, alongside a strong understanding of insurance terminology, risk indicators, and underwriting workflows.
As part of your duties, you will be responsible for:
- Optimising prompts for accuracy, grounding, and consistency
- Defining evaluation scenarios and validation datasets
- Using LLM-as-judge and feedback loops to improve responses
- Continuously refining prompts based on model performance, user feedback
- Working with AI engineers to improve retrieval quality, design context injection strategies
- Ensuring outputs are grounded, explainable, aligned with underwriting logic
Business Alignment:
- Translating underwriting workflows into prompt logic
- Incorporating domain-specific language, risk indicators, and business rules
- Collaborating with underwriters and SMEs
- Maintaining prompt library and versioning
- Defining templates for different LOBs and use cases
- Ensuring consistency across assistant and workflows
Qualifications and experience we consider to be essential for the role:
- Experience: 5–8+ years with 2–4+ years in GenAI / prompt engineering
- Domain (Mandatory): Strong insurance/underwriting knowledge
- Education: Bachelor’s/Master’s in Engineering, Data Science, Business Analytics, or related
- Profile Type: Hybrid business + technical, strong analytical thinker
Technical skills:
- GenAI & Prompting – prompt engineering techniques (few‑shot, chain‑of‑thought, structured prompts); Experience with Azure OpenAI / LLM APIs; Prompt versioning and optimisation
- RAG & Retrieval Awareness – understanding of Azure AI Search and retrieval behaviour; Context design and grounding strategies; Ability to reduce hallucinations via prompt + retrieval design
- Evaluation & Quality – LLM-as-judge / evaluation frameworks; Output validation and benchmarking; A/B testing of prompts
- Safety & Governance – Awareness of guardrails (NeMo Guardrails); PII handling (Presidio); Responsible AI practices
- Collaboration & Tools – Familiarity with APIs, JSON, and structured outputs; Basic Python; Working with AI engineers and data teams
