The ideal candidate is enthusiastic, committed, and has a ‘can do’ approach. Working as part of a team is a rewarding aspect of the job, involving loading duties and supporting the team ethos. This is a physical role that requires moving bulky items, full wheelie bins, and handling sacks, keeping you fit and active.

We offer on-the-job training and instruction on our fleet vehicles and plant, as well as in‑cab technology. Your driving experience will be utilised and expanded. Preferred qualifications include a full Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC card with at least 2 years remaining) and a valid Digital Tachograph Card. If you do not already hold these, we can assist with obtaining and training for them.

Reporting to Supervisors/Managers, you will start and finish at Oakwood House in Marsh Barton. Car parking on site is free but limited; we also provide good safe bike facilities. Regular working hours begin at 6 am, collecting various waste types on a primarily ‘Group Team Task & Finish’ basis, including food waste rounds. Hours average 37 per week, working 5 days out of 7, with catch‑up Saturdays after Bank Holidays, Good Friday and Christmas, and adverse weather. Overtime is available throughout the year.

The waste operative driver is responsible for their own safety, crew safety and the safety of members of the public on a daily basis. Full PPE will be supplied and must be worn in this all‑weather role.

Benefits include a generous contributory pension scheme, up to 29 days paid leave (service related), fully supported training opportunities, occupational health, wellbeing and employee assistance programmes, and refreshment facilities with showers/toilet facilities at the beginning, middle and end of the shift.

Waste, Recycling and Fleet is a very busy service that serves over 61,500 households and many businesses in the city, conducting over 120,000 collections a week. Our professional drivers are crucial not only for their driving skills but also for ensuring waste operative loaders operate safely. We are looking for self‑motivated individuals who are willing to participate in training to further their career progression.
