We are seeking a skilled Toolmaker to join a busy manufacturing environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for the preparation, maintenance, repair and testing of production tooling, ensuring equipment is maintained to the highest standards to support safe, efficient and reliable manufacturing operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, maintain and repair existing production tooling in line with operational requirements.
  • Identify tooling issues and implement effective corrective actions.
  • Clean and maintain production tooling to support production schedules and on-time delivery.
  • Ensure all tooling is safe, fully operational and production-ready following preventative maintenance procedures.
  • Communicate any issues that may impact planned work or deadlines to the relevant supervisor.
  • Assist with engineering changes and support the management of tooling spare parts.
  • Prepare, set up, machine and test tooling as required.
  • Manufacture prototype tooling, jigs and templates from a range of materials where required, including producing bills of materials and validating completed work.
  • Inspect repaired and machined tooling to ensure compliance with engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Manufacture replacement components for plant equipment and tooling when required.
  • Assemble, fit and test tooling to confirm correct operation.
  • Set up, monitor and inspect tooling before removing it from production machinery.
  • Follow up completed repairs by obtaining feedback from production and quality teams, maintaining accurate maintenance records.
  • Promote and support Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) standards throughout the workplace.

Skills & Experience

  • Time-served apprenticeship in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Strong hand tool skills (tools provided).
  • Ability to interpret and work from engineering drawings.
  • Experience using toolroom equipment, including overhead cranes.
  • Competent in the use of inspection equipment such as micrometers, height gauges and other precision measuring instruments.
  • Experience operating conventional machine tools, including milling machines, lathes, surface grinders, bench grinders and hardness testing equipment.
  • Experience following preventative maintenance programmes.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively across all levels of the business.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Previous experience within a manufacturing or engineering environment.

Desirable Experience

  • Servicing and maintaining vacuum die sets, ideally for aluminium applications.
  • Die casting industry experience.
  • Repairing ancillary tooling used within a casting environment, including trim tools, spray heads and straightening tools.
  • Operating CNC lathes, milling machines and grinding equipment.
  • TIG and MIG welding experience.
  • Good knowledge of engineering materials, including steels and alloys.
  • Ability to interpret CMM inspection reports.
  • Repairing and maintaining hydraulic systems, including cylinders and associated pipework.
  • Understanding of 5S methodology and continuous improvement principles.
