Ecologist

To provide specialist ecological and management advice. To help meet legislative requirements while conserving and enhancing the biodiversity of the City.

Key responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with statutory requirements related to biodiversity.

Maintain current knowledge of planning and wildlife legislation, and update colleagues as necessary.

Key tasks

  • Provide ecological advice to colleagues, developers, agents, and the public; collaborate with statutory agencies on biodiversity issues, from species to habitats.
  • Assist in evaluating planning applications and provide comments on biodiversity matters.
  • Advise enforcement teams when appropriate.
  • Support council projects with ecological advice.
  • Maintain updated information on Local Site designations, review criteria periodically, and assist in developing site management plans.
  • Assist with appointing and procuring consultants for ecological surveys supporting planning, projects, licenses, and monitoring.
  • Implement habitat management directly or via contracts.
  • Assist in creating interpretation materials and media.
  • Prepare and present reports on biodiversity and ecology to colleagues, councillors, and the public, including Biodiversity Duty reports.
  • Conduct ecological surveys for habitat creation and enhancement projects.
  • Collaborate with the SCC Principal Ecologist and other senior officers, deputising when needed.

Other duties and policies

  • Perform duties in accordance with our Equal Opportunities Policy, Code of Conduct, and other policies.
  • Comply with health and safety regulations and legislation.
  • Manage records in line with the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
  • Handle records and information respecting data protection laws and GDPR, safeguarding personal privacy.

Undertake any other duties consistent with the objectives of the post.
