A private family is seeking an experienced Groundsman to join their household and support the running of their beautiful country residence in Dorset.
This is a long-term opportunity for a professional, proactive and skilled grounds person who takes pride in maintaining and developing a private estate to exceptional standards.
The property is a second home, occupied for approximately 18 weeks each year, together with occasional weekends and holidays.
Working closely with the House Manager, you will ensure the grounds are always beautifully presented and prepared for the family's arrival.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintaining the estate grounds to an exceptional standard
- Lawn care, mowing and general grass maintenance
- Hedge cutting, pruning and seasonal garden care
- Planting and cultivation across formal gardens and growing areas
- Vegetable garden and fruit tree management
- Orchard care and maintenance
- Paddock upkeep
- Pond, river and weir maintenance
- Tree monitoring and general estate care
- Log cutting, storage and fire preparation
- Fire building and management during family stays
- Storm preparation, recovery and estate safety checks
- Operating and maintaining garden machinery and equipment
- Basic estate repairs and general maintenance
- Vehicle care and support duties as required
- Security checks and routine property inspections
- Liaising with contractors when required
- Supporting family arrivals and departures
- Candidate Profile
The successful candidate will have
- Previous experience maintaining private gardens, country estates or similar environments
- A minimum of three years' relevant groundskeeping, gardening or estate maintenance experience
- Strong horticultural knowledge and practical gardening skills
- Experience operating and maintaining garden machinery
- Excellent attention to detail and pride in maintaining high standards
- A professional, discreet and flexible approach
- The ability to work independently as well as part of a wider household team
- A dog-friendly attitude
- A valid UK driving licence
- The right to work in the UK
Additional skills such as tree surgery, chainsaw operation, machinery maintenance or estate repair experience would be highly advantageous.
Working Hours
Due to the nature of the estate and seasonal requirements, working hours will vary throughout the year.
Occasional weekend working may be required during busy periods and family occupancy, with time off in lieu provided.
