We are seeking a compassionate, dedicated Complex Needs SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist setting supporting pupils with a wide range of additional needs. This long-term temporary supply role requires someone who is patient, adaptable, and confident in supporting students with profound, multiple, or complex learning needs. You will work closely with teachers and therapists to deliver tailored support, promote independence, and help create a safe, nurturing, and engaging learning environment where all pupils can thrive.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with complex needs, including PMLD, SLD, ASD, communication difficulties, and physical disabilities.
  • Assist with personalised learning programmes and therapeutic activities.
  • Support personal care routines (where required), including feeding, toileting, and mobility assistance.
  • Use specialist communication methods (PECS, Makaton, visuals) where appropriate.
  • Help maintain a structured, safe, and sensory-appropriate learning space.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and other support staff.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships that promote confidence, emotional regulation, and independence.

Requirements

  • Experience working with children or young people with complex SEN (school, care, or similar settings).
  • A caring, patient, and resilient approach.
  • Willingness to support personal care and physical needs.
  • Strong communication skills and a team-focused attitude.
  • Ability to follow guidance from teachers and external professionals.
  • Understanding of safeguarding and a commitment to pupil wellbeing.
  • Experience with sensory approaches, Makaton, PECS, or moving & handling training (desirable).
