This role will have a predominant focus on contentious matters, in particular private enforcement and other competition disputes. It is part of a market‑leading competition litigation practice integrated within the Competition, Regulation and Trade group.
Responsibilities include:
- Defending follow‑on, hybrid and stand‑alone claims across multiple jurisdictions and in collective actions before the Competition Appeal Tribunal.
- Providing strategic advice on private enforcement risks.
- Assisting in the defence of damages actions in the High Court and Competition Appeal Tribunal.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage work to support optimal utilisation; act as lead lawyer, proactively manage and progress matters with partner oversight where appropriate.
- Lead and develop a team, delegating work, providing feedback to juniors, and communicating progress to supervisors and team members.
- Consult and offer solutions on technical client issues.
- Handle the billing process as required.
- Develop and strengthen client relationships by anticipating needs, providing prompt responses and progress updates.
- Support the firm and broaden networks: establish relationships across the global network, uphold the firm’s values, contribute to corporate social responsibility and diversity and inclusion initiatives, mentor juniors, raise profile via external bodies, marketing/industry events, and internal training/pre‑precedent preparation.
- Ensure compliance with risk requirements, firm policies, relevant professional responsibilities and legislation, and contribute to billing, engagement and client acceptance processes.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Six to eight years of post‑qualified experience in competition law, with willingness to consider candidates with less or more experience if they meet required competencies.
- Academic excellence: a 2:1 degree (or equivalent) and first‑time passes of solicitors’ examinations. Full academic details (grades, subjects, transcripts) must be provided.
- Hands‑on competition experience essential, including disputes in the High Court and/or the Competition Appeal Tribunal; experience with collective actions in the CAT is especially welcome.
- Self‑starter with excellent interpersonal skills, able to communicate with individuals at all levels.
- Willingness to supervise and develop Junior Associates and Trainees within the group.
- Personal leadership: takes initiative and ownership, embraces challenge, brings energy and drive.
- Technical capability: seeks growth opportunities and delivers value for clients.
- Collaborative: works as a team player, learns from and supports others.
