Exalto Consulting is working with a large UK-based organisation in the retail space to appoint an experienced SQL Server DBA. This is an opportunity to support and evolve a data platform that underpins critical business operations, including transactional systems, reporting, and analytics. The role sits within a technology and transformation function, where data reliability, performance, and availability are key to delivering a consistent and dependable service to customers and teams across the business.
You will take responsibility for the performance, stability, and resilience of SQL Server environments, supporting systems that are central to how the organisation operates. Alongside day-to-day database administration, you will play an important role in improving performance, supporting data integration, and contributing to ongoing platform development, including future data initiatives.
What You'll Be Doing
- Managing and maintaining SQL Server environments across development, test, and production
- Ensuring high availability through replication, failover, and recovery processes
- Designing and managing backup and disaster recovery strategies
- Monitoring database performance and proactively resolving issues before they impact users
- Investigating and leading resolution of database-related incidents
- Carrying out performance tuning, including query optimisation and indexing
- Supporting ETL and reporting platforms (such as SSIS and SSRS)
- Working with engineering and data teams to improve database design and data access
- Contributing to system upgrades, migrations, and platform enhancements
- Maintaining secure and compliant database environments
We're looking for someone who is both technically capable and thoughtful in how they approach systems that the business depends on.
Essential experience
- Strong experience administering Microsoft SQL Server in production environments
- Proven ability to monitor, maintain, and optimise database performance
- Solid T-SQL skills, including query tuning and optimisation
- Experience implementing and supporting high availability and disaster recovery solutions
- Familiarity with ETL and reporting tools, particularly SSIS and SSRS
- Experience diagnosing and resolving performance, availability, and data issues
Desirable
- Experience with Oracle or Teradata environments
- Exposure to large-scale or complex data platforms
- Familiarity with cloud or modern data environments, such as Microsoft Fabric or Azure
- Understanding of data warehousing and analytics platforms
