Automation & Batch Scheduling Analyst Hybrid (Bradford, West Yorkshire, 2 days onsite in Bradford per week). Exalto Consulting is working with a well-established UK business in the retail sector to appoint an experienced Automation & Batch Scheduling Analyst. This organisation operates large-scale, business-critical systems where reliable processing and system stability are essential to day-to-day operations. This is a hands-on technical role focused on maintaining and improving the automation and batch environments that sit at the heart of core services.
You'll be joining a team responsible for ensuring systems run efficiently, consistently, and with minimal disruption. You will take ownership of automation, workload scheduling, and batch processing activities within a mainframe environment. This includes developing scripts, managing job schedules, and resolving issues to maintain smooth and reliable operations. Your work will help ensure that critical processes run on time, data is handled accurately, and operational risks are minimised.
- Developing and maintaining automation scripts to support operational processes
- Creating and enhancing tools to improve efficiency and reduce manual intervention
- Designing and managing batch job schedules, ensuring workflows run as expected
- Monitoring job execution, resolving conflicts, and managing dependencies
- Writing and maintaining JCL, ensuring jobs are efficient and reliable
- Investigating and resolving batch failures, performance issues, and system errors
- Supporting daily, weekly, and month-end processing cycles
- Using system utilities to manage data, backups, and recovery tasks
- Providing second and third-line support for batch and scheduling incidents
- Working closely with developers, infrastructure, and application teams
- Contributing to continuous improvement, including reviewing and optimising existing processes
We're looking for someone who is comfortable working in a hands-on mainframe environment, with a strong sense of ownership and attention to detail.
Essential experience:- Strong experience with REXX scripting and automation
- Proficiency in CLIST programming
- Solid experience managing batch scheduling tools such as TWS or OPC
- In-depth knowledge of JCL and batch processing environments
- Familiarity with z/OS, TSO/ISPF, and core mainframe utilities
- Experience diagnosing and resolving batch and scheduling issues
- Experience with CICS environments
- Exposure to large-scale enterprise systems, particularly within retail or similar sectors
- Confidence documenting processes and sharing knowledge with wider teams
