Role Purpose

ERS is a leading underwriter of a wide range of specialist motor insurance products. Our focus is on delivering sustainable, high‐margin growth through the provision of high‐quality propositions to a wide range of broker partners. The Senior Underwriter's primary responsibilities are to execute our underwriting strategy and develop our underwriting appetite, working closely with the Pricing and Technology teams, as well as other stakeholders across the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of the underwriting strategy for our products, based on market knowledge and product expertise, while executing the strategy with the product delivery team.
  • Contribute to portfolio performance management by analysing results, executing selection and pricing strategies, and providing recommendations that drive continuous improvement to meet or exceed financial plans.
  • Work with Product Performance Analysts to provide direction and support, improving their knowledge and utilising their skills to achieve strategic goals.
  • Constantly refine underwriting appetite to capture market opportunities and outperform peers through superior risk selection and proactive business mix management.
  • Act as a technical referral point for other underwriting team members, brokers, and internal functions, using extensive risk, product, and pricing knowledge to inform decisions.
  • Provide feedback on risk pricing models to improve accuracy and sophistication.
  • Collaborate with all business areas to deliver a clear, seamless set of propositions to the market.
  • Contribute to "first line of defence" activities, using audit and peer‐review tools, exception reporting, and performance MI to assess and monitor underwriting activities in accordance with underwriting authorities, processes, regulatory, and conduct standards.

  • Extensive technical knowledge of the product(s), including features, performance drivers, market dynamics, and customer requirements.
  • Demonstrated gravitas and clarity of purpose that inspires confidence in senior stakeholders.
  • Proficient in creating coherent and comprehensive Microsoft PowerPoint presentations for committees and senior stakeholders.
  • Commercial awareness with the ability to spot and seize opportunities that enhance financial performance.
  • Detailed understanding of pricing practices and methodologies, with experience improving pricing capability and providing insights on models.
