Field Service Engineer – Radar & Maritime Systems (320jc) – North London – Competitive salary and benefits package Ex-Mil Recruitment is currently recruiting for an experienced Field Service Engineer to join an established and highly respected UK engineering organisation specialising in advanced radar, maritime navigation and surveillance technology. DUE TO THE NATURE OF THIS RECRUITMENT CONSULTANCY, WE ARE ONLY ABLE TO REPRESENT INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE EX MILITARY. Our client designs, develops and supports sophisticated electronic systems used across naval vessels, commercial shipping and shore-based installations worldwide. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with a strong background in electronics, radar, communications or maritime systems who enjoys a combination of hands-on technical engineering, problem-solving and international travel. The position would particularly suit an individual transitioning from the Armed Forces or an experienced military veteran who has previously worked with complex electronic equipment, radar systems, communications technology or naval engineering systems. The role is based in North London, with a hybrid working arrangement of three days on-site and two days working remotely when operational commitments permit. Key Responsibilities Working within an established Customer Services and Technical Support team, you will be responsible for providing engineering support to customers operating sophisticated radar and maritime electronic systems. Your responsibilities will include: - Installing, commissioning, maintaining and troubleshooting radar, navigation and electronic surveillance equipment. - Conducting technical service visits aboard naval vessels, commercial ships and at shore-based installations. - Undertaking system testing, fault diagnosis and acceptance testing to ensure equipment meets operational requirements. - Providing technical support and advice to customers in the UK and internationally. - Supporting the technical helpdesk when not undertaking field assignments, including responding to customer enquiries and producing technical guidance. - Preparing accurate service reports, technical documentation and associated records. - Working towards delivering technical training to customers and equipment operators. - Identifying recurring technical problems and communicating findings to engineering and management teams. - Ensuring all work is undertaken in accordance with relevant health and safety procedures and engineering standards. - Participating in additional technical training and professional development as required. We are looking for a practical, self-motivated engineer with a strong technical foundation and the confidence to work independently in demanding operational environments. Essential skills and experience: - A sound understanding of electronic or electrical engineering principles. - Previous experience in field service, maintenance, installation, commissioning or technical support. - The ability to read, understand and interpret technical manuals, engineering drawings and technical documentation. - Good fault-finding and diagnostic skills, particularly involving complex electronic equipment. - Familiarity with computer hardware, software applications and basic networking principles. - Good communication skills and the ability to deal professionally with customers. - A methodical approach to problem-solving and technical reporting. - The ability to work independently, often at customer locations away from the main office. - A full driving licence and valid passport. - Willingness to undertake regular UK and overseas travel, sometimes at short notice. - Eligibility to obtain and successfully pass UK SC Security Clearance. Desirable skills and experience: - Previous experience with marine radar, surveillance, navigation or communications systems. - Knowledge of maritime electronics, navigation equipment or radar display systems. - Experience working aboard naval or commercial vessels. - Familiarity with electronic test equipment and electrical safety procedures. - An ONC or equivalent qualification in Electronics, Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline. - Experience working with military or defence-related electronic systems. Previous maritime experience would be advantageous but is not essential, provided applicants can demonstrate suitable technical engineering experience and a willingness to learn. This opportunity could be especially attractive to individuals who have served in technical engineering appointments within the UK Armed Forces and probably from the Royal Navy or RAF backgrounds. You do not necessarily need previous experience working on maritime radar systems. A strong grounding in electronics, fault diagnosis, system maintenance and technical troubleshooting could provide an excellent foundation for this position. Although this role is based in North London, this is a customer-facing engineering role involving regular travel throughout the UK and overseas and may involve working aboard naval vessels, commercial ships or at shore-based installations. Most overseas assignments are relatively short, generally lasting no longer than two weeks, although some travel may be required at short notice. You must also be comfortable working in operational engineering environments, which may include: - Working at heights, potentially up to 70 metres, with appropriate training and safety arrangements. - Accessing equipment via ladders and stairways. - Working in restricted or confined equipment spaces. - Carrying tools and test equipment to operational locations. - Undertaking tower climbing and rescue training where required. The position is subject to appropriate occupational health assessments, relevant safety training and reasonable adjustments where applicable. What the Role Offers - The opportunity to work with advanced radar, surveillance and maritime electronic systems. - A varied engineering position combining technical support, field service and international assignments. - Hybrid working arrangements when operational commitments allow. - Exposure to both defence and commercial maritime environments. - Opportunities to develop specialist technical knowledge and undertake additional training. - A role offering considerable independence, responsibility and direct customer interaction. - The opportunity to join an established engineering organisation supporting customers around the world. In return they are offering a good starting salary and benefits package which includes 25 days + Bank Holidays, as well as further benefits to be discussed at interview. Security Clearance Due to the nature of the equipment, customers and operational environments involved, applicants must be able to obtain and maintain UK Security Check (SC) clearance and any job offer will be subject to getting the clearance.
