HGV Shunter / Fleet & Yard Operative (283jc) – Saltney, Chester - £33,000 + Benefits

Our client is seeking a reliable, practical and hands-on HGV Shunter / Fleet & Yard Operative to join their transport operation based in Saltney, Chester.

DUE TO THE NATURE OF THIS RECRUITMENT CONSULTANCY, WE ARE ONLY ABLE TO REPRESENT INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE EX MILITARY.

This is an interesting and varied position for someone who enjoys working around commercial vehicles and doesn't necessarily want to spend every working day out on the road.

Working alongside the Transport Manager, you will be responsible for the day-to-day movement, preparation and upkeep of a fleet of HGVs, trailers and vans, together with supporting general fleet and yard operations.

The position is predominantly Monday to Friday and site-based, although there may occasionally be a requirement to stay away from home depending upon operational and deployment requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Your duties will include

  • Shunting HGVs and trailers between yards and storage facilities.
  • Taking vehicles to and collecting them from garages, servicing centres and testing facilities.
  • Taking trucks and trailers for brake testing.
  • Cleaning and preparing trucks and vans for operational use.
  • Ensuring vehicles are loaded with the correct equipment and materials.
  • Setting up and collapsing specialist mobile trailers within the yard.
  • Carrying out basic vehicle checks, including tyres, fluid levels and general condition.
  • Undertaking minor vehicle and trailer repairs where competent to do so.
  • Identifying and reporting defects and maintenance requirements.
  • Liaising with third-party garages regarding servicing, repairs and bookings.
  • Supporting general yard, fleet and vehicle preparation activities.

The role is therefore considerably broader than simply moving vehicles around the yard.

What We Are Looking For

Essential requirements

  • HGV Class 1 (C+E) licence
  • Valid Driver CPC
  • Previous experience driving and manoeuvring HGVs and trailers
  • Experience working with commercial vehicles
  • Understanding of basic vehicle checks and vehicle safety
  • Good vehicle manoeuvring skills
  • Strong safety awareness
  • Practical and mechanically minded approach
  • Ability to work independently and use your own initiative
  • Good organisational and communication skills
  • Ability to prioritise a varied workload

Desirable Experience

  • Previous experience in any of the following would be particularly useful:
  • HGV shunting or yard operations
  • Transport or fleet environments
  • Basic mechanical or vehicle maintenance
  • Trailer assembly, dismantling or preparation
  • Working with garages and commercial vehicle repair facilities
  • Specialist or event trailer operations

You will also need to be physically capable of undertaking hands-on yard and vehicle duties and be prepared to help the wider transport team when required.

This isn't a role where you will simply be handed the keys and spend all week driving from A to B.

You will become part of the wider transport operation and take responsibility for ensuring vehicles and trailers are properly prepared, maintained and ready when required.

Monday to Friday
