VALOUR Network Manager (North of England) vacancy in Fulwood Barracks, Preston; Imphal Barracks, York; or Kendrew Barracks, Oakham (323JB)

Location: Fulwood Barracks, Preston; Imphal Barracks, York; or Kendrew Barracks, Oakham

Op VALOUR is creating a UK-wide approach to help veterans access coordinated support with health, housing and employment. The Ministry of Defence’s Office for Veterans’ Affairs is looking for a VALOUR Network Manager to lead the programme’s work across the North of England.

This is a leadership role with the opportunity to shape a new model of support and make a practical difference to veterans and their families.

The role

You’ll lead a team of seven VALOUR Field Officers working across the East Midlands, Yorkshire and the Humber, the North West, and the North East. You’ll help them build strong local partnerships and bring together organisations that support veterans, including local authorities, health services, DWP Armed Forces Champions, voluntary organisations and VALOUR Recognised Centres.

You’ll also gather insight from across the region, share good practice, and help connect local work with national priorities such as the Veterans’ Strategy and Armed Forces Covenant Duty.

Location: Fulwood Barracks, Preston; Imphal Barracks, York; or Kendrew Barracks, Oakham

Salary: £46,040 a year

Hours: 37 per week

Travel: Regular travel across your region and occasional travel elsewhere in the UK. Work-related travel and subsistence are reimbursed, except travel to your base location, in line with departmental policy.

Working pattern: Hybrid working may be available, subject to business needs. Office-based employees are normally expected to spend at least 60% of their working time in the office.

Relocation: Relocation expenses are not available.

What you’ll do

  • Lead and support a geographically dispersed team, setting clear expectations for performance, quality and team culture.
  • Build trusted relationships with senior regional and local partners.
  • Support effective forums where organisations can coordinate their work and share good practice.
  • Help partners turn strategic priorities into collaborative action.
  • Share local insight to improve VALOUR’s approach and inform national decision-making.
  • Promote relevant statutory services and initiatives to improve outcomes for the Armed Forces community.

The programme is developing, so the role will evolve as priorities change. You’ll need to be comfortable with ambiguity and willing to travel regularly.

What you’ll bring

You’ll have experience leading or managing teams across different locations, including through change. You’ll also be confident working with partners across sectors and levels of seniority, communicating with a range of audiences, and turning insight into practical action.

We’re looking for someone who can:

  • Build and maintain collaborative stakeholder relationships and support effective forums.
  • Make sound decisions, solve problems and adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Work independently, plan and prioritise effectively, and keep people focused in complex situations.
  • Understand the Armed Forces Covenant, the challenges of military service and the transition to civilian life.
  • Bring familiarity with veterans’ support services or a similar delivery landscape.
  • Understand local government, devolution and decentralisation, including local government reorganisation.
  • Hold a full UK driving licence and/or be willing to undertake frequent travel.

Experience in the Armed Forces community support landscape, local government, or policy and strategy development across government would be an advantage.

What’s on offer

The post includes a Civil Service pension, with an employer contribution currently listed as 28.97%, learning and development tailored to the role, flexible working options where business needs allow, and an inclusive working environment.

This vacancy is part of the Great Place to Work for Veterans initiative. Successful applicants will need to pass pre-employment checks, including baseline personnel security checks and Security Check (SC) vetting. The MOD cannot sponsor a visa for this role.
