Job Description

Quantity Surveyor

Work Location: Project based role complying with the Company's flexible working policies - 3 days onsite, 2 day remote with working locations across Newcastle or Century Way offices or the site ( Teesside ).

Project:
The roles support a high-profile UK infrastructure project: a natural gas-fired carbon capture power station. The team will work within the power transmission and distribution business unit, focusing on the design and build of two 275kV substations required to connect the plant to the national grid. The project is currently in the design phase, with construction scheduled to begin in September.

Role summary:

Experienced QS with 5+ years experience who has a track record in managing all costs and income within their area of responsibility. They seek to minimise the costs of a project and enhance value for money, while still achieving the required standards and quality. Preferably, they will be a Chartered Member of the RICS, CICES or CIOB or working to achieve in the near future. Experience of managing a small team of commercial staff as well as mentoring others on their journey to becoming professionally qualified is desirable. They will maintain their Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Dimensions

  • Financial: Manages all costs and income within their area of responsibility
  • Organisational: Direct reports could include Apprentice QS, Trainee QS, Graduate or Assistant QSs

Interfaces

  • Internal: Commercial and wider Project Team
  • External: Supply Chain, Customers, Stakeholders, Professional and Industry Bodies

Governance

  • Has a good knowledge of and adheres to the Company's governance requirements and maximises LEAN/digital opportunities

Commercial Management and Administration

  • Requests information and systematically checks data
  • Prepares Activity Schedules, Resource Schedules & analyses tender documents
  • Critically appraises, estimates and negotiates the above with 3rd parties
  • Reviews complex contract programmes such as Time-Location
  • Assists with the preparation of delay and disruption programmes
  • Monitors subcontract activities, measure and respond appropriately
  • Prepares Internal reports, commercial progress and financial reconciliation and report to senior project staff

Customer/Change Management

  • Understanding of the Customer Contract and undertakes customer and stakeholder management
  • Analyses rates & prices, agreement of variations and or compensation events as required
  • Prepares, submits and negotiates claims when required
  • Manages commercial aspects with Customer and Stakeholders for their area of responsibility

Procurement

  • Undertakes constructability analyses using construction programmes
  • Prepares procurement programme and helps develop the strategy

Essentials - The following qualifications or their equivalent are essential:

  • BSc or MSc in Quantity Surveying or equivalent
  • Membership of RICS, ICES or CIOB (or working towards)
  • CSCS Card (Professional Qualified Person)

Experience:

  • Candidates should have a background in UK infrastructure project delivery (e.g., energy, transport, nuclear, highways, or aviation).
  • Experience within a Tier 1 contractor environment and supply chain management is preferred.
  • Proficiency with NEC forms of contract is essential.
