Due to continued growth and recent project awards, a well-established building services contractor is looking to appoint an experienced Mechanical Design Manager to join its Mechanical Contracts team based in Croydon. This is a senior role suited to a Mechanical Design Manager who can take full ownership of mechanical design delivery while working closely with contract management, estimating, CAD / BIM and site teams.
The Mechanical Design Manager will be responsible for managing the mechanical design process from initial client brief through to fully coordinated designs ready for construction. Projects range from £100k to £5m and cover a broad mix of commercial and specialist building services schemes across London and the Southeast.
The Role
As Mechanical Design Manager, you will lead the design of mechanical building services systems, ensuring solutions are compliant, buildable, and aligned with programme and commercial requirements. You will regularly attend site, undertake surveys, engage with clients and consultants, and present designs internally to delivery teams.
Key responsibilities
- Managing mechanical design from concept through to construction issue
- Reviewing specifications, architectural drawings and room data sheets
- Designing HVAC, heating, ventilation, comfort cooling, air conditioning, domestic services and public health systems
- Delivering Design & Build solutions
- Coordinating with estimating, CAD, BIM and contract management teams
- Ensuring compliance with current regulations, including HTMs
- Maintaining a strong understanding of BMS and control systems
- Producing high-quality technical documentation and design presentations
Key requirements
- Minimum 10 years’ experience within building services engineering
- HNC, HND or Degree qualified in Building Services Engineering (or equivalent)
- Trade qualifications aligned to a Mechanical Design Engineer background
- Strong knowledge of mechanical design software
- Experience with CAD, BIM and Revit (advantageous)
- Some exposure to estimating software and planning tools such as MS Project or Asta Powerproject
- Full UK driving licence
