Evolve Staffing Ltd is proud to represent a high-performing NHS Trust seeking an innovative and dynamic Consultant in Stroke Medicine in Hereford. This is a pivotal role designed to deliver and develop world-class stroke and TIA services across the region. The Trust’s Stroke service has a proven track record of excellence, consistently achieving SSNAP A or B ratings. You will join a forward-thinking Integrated Care System (ICS) team committed to a strategic vision of 7-day service excellence, including advanced ambulatory care and enhanced early supported discharge (ESD).
The Service & Technology
- Integrated Model: The unit features a 26-bedded combined ward including a 6-bedded Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU), acute, and rehabilitation beds.
- Advanced Diagnostics: Access to onsite MRI (2 scanners) and CT (2 scanners), utilizing Rapid AI for scan interpretation and CT perfusion.
- Specialist Support: Work alongside an established team of Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) available 8am–8pm, 7 days a week, plus a fully qualified ACP.
- Intervention Pathways: Established pathways for Thrombolysis and Thrombectomy (in collaboration with regional neurosurgical centres).
Main Duties & Job Plan (10 PAs)
- Direct Clinical Care (7.5–8.5 PAs): Includes hyper-acute, acute, and rehab stroke care, TIA clinics, and MDT leadership.
- Supporting Professional Activities (1.5 PAs): Time allocated for clinical governance, revalidation, and CPD.
- On-Call & Weekends: Participation in a 1 in 6 weekend morning rota (09:00–13:00). Potential opportunity to join the 1 in 13 weekend GIM rota (8am-8pm) which attracts additional PAs.
- Leadership: For suitably qualified candidates, the option to step into a Stroke Clinical Lead role is available (attracts 1 SPA).
- Education: Supervision of F1 doctors and CESR candidates.

Education & Qualifications
- MRCP or equivalent (AF/I/C).
- Full GMC Registration and on the Specialist Register for Stroke Medicine and GIM (or within 6 months of achieving CCT/CESR at the time of interview) (AF/I/C).
- Current ALS Certificate or equivalent (AF/I).
- Desirable: Higher degree (MD, PhD) or subspecialty interest that complements the existing team (AF/I).
Experience & Skills
- Clinical Expertise: Proven experience in managing a Stroke Medicine caseload and acute medicine (AF/I).
- Leadership: Ability to lead and develop a multidisciplinary service while building effective working relationships across all levels of staff (AF/I).
- Audit & Research: Knowledge of multidisciplinary audit principles with evidence of direct involvement in audits within the last 18 months (I).
- Communication: Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to empathize and demonstrate probity (I).
Management & Teaching
- Management: Evidence of formal management training or leadership in change management (AF/I/C).
- Teaching: Evidence of effective teaching for medical students and the wider MDT, with the ability to present effectively to an audience (AF/I/P).
