Evolito’s mission is to accelerate the adoption of electric propulsion in aerospace applications in support of a net-zero world. We will help to revolutionise personal mobility and transform our towns and cities with clean, noise-free air transportation. Evolito develops and manufactures class-leading, lightweight, high-power, and high-torque-density electric propulsion systems for a range of aerospace markets, including EVTOL, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and General Aviation. As well as ultra-high performance, low-weight electric motors and controllers, Evolito specialises in high integrity, bespoke battery systems for the aerospace and defence markets. The team is scaling rapidly and has ambitious growth plans over the next twelve to eighteen months.
As part of our current high-growth phase, we are creating our Research and Technology (R&T) team and are looking for a Principal Technical Specialist - Power Electronics to join us. The R&T team is responsible for the development of new systems, electric machines and power control electronics in support of new and existing customers. This includes electric propulsion systems, electrical generation systems and power management systems for all-electric and hybrid-electric aircraft.
As the Principal Technical Specialist - Power Electronics, you will play a pivotal technical leadership role in shaping the design, development, and delivery of high-performance power electronic systems. You will act as a technical authority, mentor, and strategic contributor, driving innovation and ensuring engineering excellence across the power electronics domain.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Lead and support the development of power electronic systems, including specification definition, architectural design, circuit design and review.
- Support the development of Evolito’s technology roadmap for power electronics including switching devices, electronic and magnetic components, circuit architecture for inverters, motor drives and DC-DC conversion.
- Develop standard work and design guidelines for the power electronics domain including power component derating, creepage and clearance, circuit simulation, EMC/EMI design and PCB layout.
- Design and validate high-power inverters for aerospace environments, ensuring compliance with performance and safety requirements.
- Support development and formal qualification testing at circuit, sub-system and system levels including the generation of test specifications and test reports.
- Contribute to the system safety case in accordance with ARP4754A and DO-254 standards.
- Support, develop and mentor the Power Electronics Team.
- Work with the Supply Chain organisation to identify and develop suppliers to meet aerospace standards.
- Support the development of academic linkage including university research, MSc/PhD research in relevant technical areas.
Skills and experience required:
- Degree or equivalent in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or a demonstrable level of relevant industrial experience.
- Previous proven experience in a relevant industry.
- Demonstrated track record of engineering ability in a power electronics discipline.
- Strong knowledge of power electronic devices (IGBTs, MOSFETs, wideband gap devices, Capacitors, Sensors).
- Previous experience of electronic component selection, characterisation and test.
- Experienced in modelling, simulation and analysis of power devices for power electronic systems (MATLAB, Simulink etc).
- Proficiency in power electronics design, including power circuit simulation, converter control, component selection and design for EMC/EMI.
- Ability to perform design analysis, including worst-case, tolerance, thermal, and stress.
- Understanding of Design for Test (DFT) and Design for Manufacture (DFM).
- Experience developing products that comply with functional safety standards (such as ARP4754A/DO254 / ISO 26262).
- Experience of working with high voltage / high current / high-energy systems, following safe systems of work.
- Ability to interface with customers and suppliers with the ability to present information, detail requirements and understand issues.
- Ability to generate documentation to a high standard for internal and external customers.
- Strong communication and presentation skills (both written and verbal), good collaboration skills, and the ability to work effectively across teams.
- Instinctive problem-solving skills coupled with a sound analytical approach.
- A 'self-starter' attitude with the ability to thrive in a small business environment.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage conflict, demands and deadlines.
- Flexible approach to work.
