We have a temporary, 18 months contract, Portal Official Veterinarian position covering Hull & Killingholme ports.

Covering both the Hull and Killingholme ports the role will be working on a shift rota basis – 6am – 2pm (Hull)/7am – 3pm (Killingholme) – which will include weekends on a rota basis.

Successful candidates will ideally have experience with export certification and must hold MRCVS registration.

Responsibilities of a Portal Official Veterinarian are to

  • Ensure that all products of animal origin presented at the Port are checked as required by retained Regulation EU 2017/625 (OCR) and that documentary, identity and physical checks are carried out in accordance with retained Commission Implementing Regulation EU 2019/2130.
  • Ensure that the necessary equipment and facilities (as required by retained Regulation EU 2017/625 and retained Commission Delegated Regulation EU 2019/2014) are available within the Port to enable veterinary checks to be carried out effectively.
  • Ensure that sufficient appropriate samples are collected and submitted for laboratory examination in line with the National Monitoring Plan and when Intensified Official Controls are in place.
  • Be present at the Portal site when all veterinary checks (including documentary, identity and physical checks) are carried out.
  • Issue Common Health Entry Documents for Animal Products (CHED-Ps) for all consignments and notifications of rejections in case of consignments that fail veterinary checks.
  • Ensure that rejected consignments are handled and disposed of in accordance with the Animal By-Products (Enforcement) (England) Regulations 2013.
  • Ensure that all required documents/records are held at the Portal site. To create and maintain accurate records of all consignments.
  • Ensure that IPAFFS is monitored for incoming notifications and to ensure that CHED-Ps are processed on IPAFFS without delay.
  • Be present at external audits carried out by APHA and FSA. To contribute to internal self-verification audits at the request of the Portal site manager.
  • Ensure that the Port is managed in a hygienic manner to respect the Hygiene Regulations for the products concerned so as not to pose a risk to the consignments being handled.
  • Ensure that the CHED-Ps for all consignments that require follow-up action (e. g. channelled goods, re-exports or destroyed consignments) are recorded in the follow-up register and investigate if no confirmation is received that the consignment has reached its destination.
  • Respond and/or to provide advice to importers/agents and Port Health Officers, as required.

  • A Veterinary Medicine degree
  • MRCVS or eligible for registration
  • Portal or Export experience is desirable
  • UK valid driving licence
