We\'re looking for passionate, reflective individuals to join our team as IAPT Psychotherapeutic Counsellor Foundation Trainees and train to deliver evidence-based therapy to people experiencing depression.
About the job
This is a training post forming part of the IAPT (NHS Talking Therapies) High Intensity Psychotherapeutic Counselling pathway. As a Foundation Trainee, you’ll work within our IAPT service while completing the Foundation year of your professional training, with protected time for study. Upon successful completion, you’ll be eligible to apply for a place on the Level 7 Postgraduate Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling.
You’ll deliver supervised, time-limited counselling to adults with mild to moderate depression, using one of the approved IAPT modalities depending on your pathway (e.g. PCE-CfD, DIT, IPT, or CTfD). You’ll work in line with NICE guidance and the IAPT Manual, building your confidence, skills, and therapeutic practice in a supportive, inclusive environment.
What we\'re looking for
Essential:
- A recognised degree (2:2 or above) in a relevant subject or equivalent academic experience
- Completion of a Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills (minimum 60 hours face-to-face tuition)
- A genuine commitment to supporting people with common mental health problems
- Compassionate, values-led interpersonal skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to reflect, learn, and grow through feedback and supervision
- Organised and able to manage time and competing demands
- Basic digital skills, including working with electronic health records
Desirable
- Experience of working in mental health or clinical settings
- Experience of working with people from diverse backgrounds or in community-based roles
- Familiarity with the IAPT stepped care model and NICE guidelines
- Ability to work to service targets/outcomes
- Fluency in a language other than English
