- A leading contractor is seeking an experienced
Senior Planner with a strong Mechanical bias to join its project delivery team based in Slough, UK.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Senior Planner, MEP Planner, Mechanical Planner, Project Planner, Construction Planner or Project Controls professional to support the successful delivery of major technically complex construction projects.
Working closely with Project Directors, Construction Managers, Mechanical Project Managers, Electrical Project Managers, Commercial Teams, Design Teams, Procurement Teams and Commissioning Managers, the successful Senior Planner will develop and maintain detailed construction programmes throughout the complete project lifecycle.
The role will place particular emphasis on Mechanical Building Services, including HVAC, pipework, chilled water, ventilation, utilities, mechanical plant, fire protection, BMS interfaces and commissioning activities.
The Role - Senior Planner
As Senior Planner, you will take responsibility for the development, management, coordination and reporting of detailed project programmes across major construction and MEP projects.
The successful Senior Planner will work closely with Mechanical, Electrical, CSA, Commercial, Design, Procurement and Commissioning Teams to ensure all activities are logically sequenced, fully coordinated and aligned with the overall construction strategy.
You will monitor progress, identify programme risks, manage critical path activities and develop recovery plans where required.
The Senior Planner will also support tender planning, baseline programme development, progress reporting, delay analysis, change management and project controls throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities of the Senior Planner
- Planning & Programme Management
- Develop, maintain and update detailed construction programmes using Primavera P6 or equivalent planning software.
- Produce baseline programmes, tender programmes, procurement schedules, design schedules, commissioning programmes and recovery plans.
- Ensure Mechanical, Electrical, CSA, procurement, design and commissioning activities are fully integrated within the overall project programme.
- Monitor critical path activities, key milestones and programme interfaces across all project disciplines.
- Manage programme updates and ensure actual progress is accurately reflected within the project schedule.
- Mechanical & MEP Planning
- Develop detailed Mechanical Building Services programmes covering HVAC, pipework, ventilation, chilled water, heating systems, mechanical plant, fire protection and specialist utility systems.
- Coordinate Mechanical installation sequences with Electrical, CSA, BIM, commissioning and client activities.
- Work closely with Mechanical Project Managers and Site Teams to validate durations, labour requirements, access constraints and construction sequencing.
- Monitor the delivery of mechanical equipment, long-lead items and specialist vendor packages.
- Ensure mechanical completion, pressure testing, flushing, balancing, commissioning and handover activities are incorporated into the programme.
- Project Controls & Progress Reporting
- Produce weekly and monthly progress reports, programme narratives, milestone trackers, dashboards and look-ahead schedules.
- Develop progress curves, S-curves, histograms, resource profiles and productivity reports.
- Monitor planned versus actual progress and identify emerging delays, risks and programme pressures.
- Support earned value management, progress measurement and performance analysis where required.
- Provide accurate programme data to Project Directors, Commercial Teams and senior stakeholders.
- Critical Path, Delay & Recovery Planning
- Analyse critical and near-critical activities and identify potential programme impacts.
- Develop mitigation strategies, resequencing plans and recovery programmes where delays occur.
- Support delay analysis, extension-of-time assessments, time impact analysis and change management.
- Maintain detailed records of programme changes, progress events, constraints and delay causes.
- Provide planning input into contractual correspondence, claims and commercial discussions.
- Design, Procurement & Commissioning Coordination
- Coordinate design information release, technical submittals, approvals, RFIs and BIM deliverables with the project programme.
- Track procurement activities, manufacturing periods, factory acceptance testing, delivery dates and installation requirements for long-lead equipment.
- Integrate commissioning activities, including Level 1-5 Commissioning, functional testing, integrated systems testing and client handover.
- Work closely with Design Managers, Procurement Teams, Commercial Teams and Commissioning Managers to maintain programme alignment.
- Support phased energisation, system completion and turnover strategies.
- Stakeholder & Project Team Coordination
- Chair planning meetings, progress reviews, programme workshops and coordination sessions.
- Work closely with Project Directors, Construction Managers, Mechanical Project Managers, Electrical Project Managers, Commercial Managers and subcontractors.
- Challenge project teams and subcontractors where programme performance falls below agreed targets.
- Provide planning guidance and programme support to site teams.
- Communicate programme risks, constraints and key decisions clearly to internal and external stakeholders.
Necessary Requirements of the Senior Planner
- Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying or a related discipline.
- Alternatively, possess a recognised trade background supported by significant planning and construction experience.
- 7+ years' experience working as a Senior Planner, MEP Planner, Mechanical Planner, Project Planner, Construction Planner or Project Controls professional.
- Proven experience working within a Main Contractor, M&E Contractor, Mechanical Contractor or specialist Engineering Contractor environment.
- Strong experience planning major Data Centre, Pharmaceutical, Life Sciences, Industrial, Commercial or Mission-Critical projects.
- Strong Mechanical Building Services knowledge, including HVAC, pipework, chilled water, ventilation, plant rooms, utilities and commissioning.
- Detailed knowledge of construction sequencing, procurement, design coordination, installation, testing and handover.
- Advanced proficiency in Primavera P6.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Project, Excel, Power BI and other project controls tools would be advantageous.
- Experience producing baseline programmes, recovery programmes, progress reports, S-curves, histograms and resource plans.
- Strong understanding of critical path analysis, delay analysis, time impact analysis and extension-of-time principles.
- Excellent communication, analytical and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage complex programme interfaces.

Desirable Experience
- Previous experience planning large-scale Data Centre or Mission-Critical projects.
- Experience working with major Mechanical Building Services packages.
- Strong understanding of Level 1-5 Commissioning and Integrated Systems Testing.
- Experience with NEC, JCT or other recognised UK construction contract forms.
- Previous involvement in delay analysis, extension-of-time claims and programme dispute support.
- Experience coordinating CSA, Mechanical and Electrical programmes on multidisciplinary projects.
- Knowledge of earned value management and cost-loaded programmes.
- Experience managing subcontractor programmes and resource-loaded schedules.
- Familiarity with Autodesk Construction Cloud, BIM 360, Navisworks, Power BI or similar digital construction platforms.
