EHS Lead Job Overview

A leading Tier 1 Contractor is seeking an experienced EHS Lead to join the senior project team on a major hyperscale data centre development in Blyth, Northumberland.

The EHS Lead will support the Project EHS Manager in leading the implementation, monitoring and continuous improvement of the project's Environmental, Health and Safety management systems.

You will coordinate EHS Advisors, engage with construction management teams and oversee subcontractor compliance across complex CSA, mechanical, electrical and commissioning activities.

Working closely with the Project Director, EHS Manager, construction teams, client representatives and specialist subcontractors, you will promote a strong safety culture and ensure that project activities comply with company procedures, client requirements and applicable UK legislation.

Key Responsibilities of the EHS Lead

• EHS Leadership and Strategy
• Support the Project EHS Manager in implementing the project Environmental, Health and Safety strategy.
• Provide visible EHS leadership across all construction and commissioning activities.
• Promote a proactive, positive and inclusive safety culture throughout the project.
• Translate company and client EHS requirements into practical site controls.
• Ensure EHS objectives, responsibilities and expectations are clearly communicated.
• Advise senior project management on emerging risks, compliance issues and improvement priorities.

• EHS Team Coordination
• Coordinate the day‑to‑day activities of project EHS Advisors and support personnel.
• Allocate inspections, audits, meetings and specialist EHS responsibilities across the team.

• Mentor EHS Advisors and support their technical and professional development.
• Establish clear priorities and performance expectations for the EHS team.

• Legislative and Management‑System Compliance

• Lead the review of risk assessments and method statements for complex or high‑risk activities.
• Ensure RAMS are task‑specific, suitable and communicated to the relevant workforce.
• Participate in pre‑construction, pre‑start and high‑risk activity review meetings.
• Verify that control measures identified within RAMS are implemented effectively on site.
• Provide EHS input into construction sequencing, logistics and commissioning plans.
• Monitor permit‑to‑work and lockout/tagout procedures.

Essential Qualifications and Experience of the EHS Lead

• NEBOSH General Certificate, NEBOSH Construction Certificate or an equivalent recognised health and safety qualification.
• Minimum five years' experience in an EHS, HSE or construction health and safety position.
• Previous experience as an EHS Lead, Senior EHS Advisor, Senior HSE Advisor or equivalent.
• Strong experience supporting major construction, engineering or industrial projects.
• Working knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and construction industry requirements.
• Good understanding of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015.
• Experience reviewing RAMS and managing controls for high‑risk construction activities.
• Demonstrated experience conducting inspections, audits and incident investigations.
• Experience coordinating or mentoring EHS team members.
• Strong knowledge of subcontractor EHS management and performance monitoring.
• Good understanding of environmental management requirements.
• Strong leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Competence using Microsoft Office and digital EHS reporting systems.

Desirable Experience

• Previous experience working on hyperscale data centres, mission‑critical facilities or large‑scale technology projects.
• Experience working for a Tier 1 Contractor or leading MEP contractor.
• NEBOSH Diploma, degree or equivalent qualification in Occupational Health and Safety.
• Professional membership of IOSH and progression towards Chartered status.
• Knowledge of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 management systems.
• Experience with electrical energisation, LOTO and permit‑to‑work systems.
• Incident investigation or root‑cause analysis qualification.
• Environmental management qualification.
• Temporary Works Coordinator or lifting‑related training.
