EHS Advisor Job Overview

A leading Tier 1 Contractor is seeking an experienced EHS Advisor to join the project delivery team on a major hyperscale data centre development in Blyth, Northumberland.

The EHS Advisor will support the implementation and continuous improvement of the project's Environmental, Health and Safety management systems. Working closely with the EHS Manager, construction management team, engineers and specialist subcontractors, you will help ensure that all site activities are planned and completed safely and in compliance with company procedures, client requirements and relevant UK legislation.

Key Responsibilities of the EHS Advisor

Environmental, Health and Safety Management

• Support the implementation of the project Environmental, Health and Safety plan.
• Promote a positive safety culture across all project activities.
• Provide practical EHS advice and guidance to construction teams, engineers and subcontractors.
• Monitor compliance with company policies, project procedures and client EHS requirements.
• Support compliance with applicable UK health and safety and environmental legislation.
• Assist with maintaining the Construction Phase Plan and associated safety documentation.
• Ensure EHS requirements are communicated effectively across the project.
• Support the EHS Manager in delivering project safety objectives and improvement initiatives.

Site Inspections and Audits

• Undertake regular site safety inspections, workplace observations and compliance audits.
• Identify unsafe conditions, behaviours and potential environmental risks.
• Record inspection findings and assign corrective actions to the responsible parties.
• Monitor corrective actions through to satisfactory close-out.
• Participate in joint inspections with clients, subcontractors and project management teams.
• Assist with internal and external EHS audits.
• Monitor housekeeping, access routes, welfare facilities and emergency arrangements.
• Prepare inspection reports and communicate key findings to the project team.

Risk Assessments and Method Statements

• Review risk assessments and method statements before work activities commence.
• Ensure RAMS are suitable, task-specific and communicated to the relevant workforce.
• Participate in pre-start meetings and high-risk activity reviews.
• Verify that control measures identified within RAMS are implemented on site.
• Support the review of lifting operations, temporary works and logistics activities.
• Monitor compliance with permit-to-work and lockout/tagout procedures.
• Provide EHS input into construction planning and work sequencing.
• Stop or elevate activities where there is an immediate risk to health, safety or the environment.

High-Risk Construction Activities

• Monitor high-risk activities including working at height, lifting operations, excavation and confined-space entry.
• Support the safe delivery of mechanical, electrical and CSA construction packages.
• Monitor electrical safety procedures, energisation controls and exclusion zones.
• Review controls relating to hot works, mobile plant and temporary electrical systems.
• Ensure suitable pedestrian and vehicle segregation arrangements are maintained.
• Monitor the selection and use of personal protective equipment.
• Verify that equipment inspections, certifications and statutory records remain current.
• Coordinate with package teams to address emerging safety risks.

Training and Workforce Engagement

• Deliver project inductions, toolbox talks and safety briefings.
• Support behavioural safety programmes and workforce engagement initiatives.
• Communicate lessons learned, safety alerts and changes to project procedures.
• Encourage workers to report hazards, near misses and improvement opportunities.
• Assist with coordinating EHS training and maintaining training records.
• Verify that personnel hold the appropriate competencies and certifications for their work.
• Participate in safety stand-downs, workshops and awareness campaigns.
• Build positive working relationships with subcontractor safety representatives.

Incident Management and Investigation

• Respond to accidents, incidents, near misses and environmental events.
• Assist with incident investigations and root-cause analysis.
• Gather evidence, interview relevant personnel and maintain accurate investigation records.
• Support the identification and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
• Prepare incident reports and communicate findings to relevant stakeholders.
• Monitor incident actions through to close-out.
• Help communicate lessons learned across the project.
• Support statutory reporting requirements where applicable.

Environmental Management

• Support the implementation of the project Environmental Management Plan.
• Monitor waste management, segregation, storage and disposal arrangements.
• Assist with controlling noise, dust, emissions, water use and potential pollution risks.
• Monitor the storage and handling of fuels, chemicals and hazardous substances.
• Ensure spill response equipment is available and appropriately maintained.
• Participate in environmental inspections and sustainability initiatives.
• Support the investigation of environmental incidents and complaints.
• Maintain environmental records and contribute to project performance reporting.

Reporting and Continuous Improvement

• Maintain accurate EHS inspection, audit, training and incident records.
• Prepare weekly and monthly EHS reports for the project management team.
• Monitor project safety observations, leading indicators and performance trends.
• Contribute to EHS meetings, coordination reviews and client presentations.
• Maintain EHS information within the project's document management system.
• Identify opportunities to improve safety systems, procedures and site practices.
• Share industry best practice and lessons learned across the project.
• Support continuous improvement within the wider EHS function.

Essential Qualifications and Experience of the EHS Advisor

• NEBOSH General Certificate, NEBOSH Construction Certificate or an equivalent recognised health and safety qualification.
• Minimum three years' experience in an EHS Advisor, HSE Advisor, Health and Safety Advisor or similar position.
• Previous experience supporting construction, engineering or industrial projects.
• Strong knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and construction industry requirements.
• Working knowledge of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015.
• Experience reviewing RAMS and monitoring high-risk construction activities.
• Experience conducting inspections, audits and incident investigations.
• Good understanding of environmental management requirements.
• Strong communication, reporting and stakeholder management skills.
• Confidence engaging with construction management teams, supervisors and site operatives.
• Competence using Microsoft Office, including Excel, Outlook and Word.
• Willingness to work in a site-based environment in Blyth.
• Eligibility to work in the United Kingdom.

Desirable Experience

• Previous experience working on hyperscale data centres, mission-critical facilities or large-scale construction projects.
• Experience working for a Tier 1 Contractor, MEP contractor or specialist subcontractor.
• Degree or diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Management, Engineering or a related discipline.
• Technical or professional membership of IOSH.
• Working towards TechIOSH, CertIOSH or Chartered status.
• Knowledge of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 management systems.
• Experience with electrical safety, energisation, LOTO and permit-to-work systems.
• Incident investigation or root-cause analysis training.
• Environmental management qualification.
• Valid CSCS card.
• First Aid at Work qualification.
• Experience using digital EHS reporting and inspection platforms.
