We are currently recruiting a Principal Development Management Officer to support a local authority planning service temporarily to cover a vacant post. This is a full-time agency assignment within Place and Economy Services, focused on managing and determining planning applications and supporting development management functions. The role requires an experienced planning professional with strong technical knowledge, sound judgement, and the ability to manage complex caseloads.
Responsibilities
- Manage and determine a caseload of planning applications, including complex cases
- Provide professional planning advice in line with local and national planning policy
- Prepare reports, recommendations, and decisions for delegated powers or committee
- Liaise with applicants, agents, consultees, and internal stakeholders
- Support junior officers and contribute to service delivery targets
- Ensure planning decisions are robust, defensible, and policy-compliant
Essential Requirements
- Significant experience in development management/planning within a local authority
- Strong knowledge of planning legislation, policy, and procedures
- Ability to manage complex applications and competing deadlines
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a professional planning team
