We are supporting a fast-growing clean technology engineering business developing next-generation high-power EV charging systems for commercial electric vehicle infrastructure. Backed by significant industry investment and involved in large-scale electrification programmes, the business is scaling rapidly and is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to support the development of advanced DC charging hardware from concept through to production.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced 3D CAD Mechanical Design Engineer with a strong automotive, EV, electromechanical or product development background who enjoys working on complex hardware integration challenges within a fast-paced engineering environment.
The Role
You will play a key role in the mechanical development of high-power EV charging units, working across enclosure design, component integration, packaging, busbar layouts, thermal considerations and full system mechanical architecture. Working closely with electrical, power electronics and manufacturing teams, you will help deliver robust, production-ready charging hardware suitable for large-scale deployment. This role would suit someone with experience designing complex electromechanical products, vehicle systems, battery systems, charging hardware, power electronics packaging or related EV technologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Product Design & Mechanical Development
- Develop 3D CAD models and detailed engineering drawings for EV charging hardware and assemblies
- Design and integrate enclosures, housings, structural assemblies and internal packaging layouts
- Support integration of electrical components including busbars, cabling, cooling systems, connectors and power electronics
- Design solutions optimised for manufacture, assembly, serviceability and cost
- Support concept development through to detailed design and engineering release
- Participate in design reviews, problem-solving and product improvement activities
- System Integration & Engineering Support
- Work closely with electrical, systems and manufacturing teams to support full hardware integration
- Support prototype builds, testing and validation activities
- Resolve packaging, tolerance and integration issues across assemblies
- Support supplier engagement, component selection and engineering changes
- Assist with installation and deployment-related engineering activities where required
- Validation, Quality & Manufacturing
- Support DFMEA, DFM and DFA activities
- Produce manufacturing-ready drawings and documentation
- Support testing, validation and continuous product improvement
- Ensure designs meet quality, safety and regulatory requirements
Experience & Skills Required
Essential
- Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
- Strong 3D CAD design experience within automotive, EV, product development or electromechanical engineering environments
- Experience designing complex mechanical assemblies and integrated hardware products
- Experience with packaging and integration of electrical or electronic components
- Understanding of manufacturing processes, tolerance management and design-for-manufacture principles
- Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
- Ability to work independently within a fast-paced engineering environment
Highly Desirable
- EV charging, battery systems or power electronics experience
- Experience designing housings, enclosures or structural packaging solutions
- Busbar integration or high-voltage component packaging experience
- Experience within automotive, motorsport, EV or clean-tech sectors
- Experience supporting prototype or low-volume production programmes
- Understanding of thermal management or cooling integration
- Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD experience
Package & Working Arrangement
- Salary up to £65–70k DOE
- Hybrid working – minimum 2 days onsite in Birmingham
