Quantitative Trader – Systematic Energy Trading – UK Hybrid – £80 - 100k + Equity Potential
Location: UK – Hybrid, approximately 1 day per week in office
Salary: DOE + potential equity & performance-related upside
Job Type: Permanent, Full Time
The Opportunity
EVEREC is partnering with a fast-growing energy trading business to recruit a Quantitative Trader to help build its systematic trading capability across European energy markets.
This is a greenfield opportunity for someone who wants greater ownership than they would typically have within an established trading house. You'll join an existing team spanning quantitative research, forecasting, data engineering and trading, with the opportunity to build out a new, nimble systematic trading capability.
Rather than joining an established desk with fixed infrastructure and strategies, you'll have the freedom to identify opportunities, develop strategies, trade them and influence how the wider capability is built.
We're looking for someone who has genuine hands‑on trading experience and understands what it means to take responsibility for trading decisions, risk and P&L – not someone whose experience has solely been researching models or developing tools for other traders.
You'll need to be technically hands‑on and comfortable developing your own research and trading tools, while working with data engineering, DevOps, quantitative researchers and external technical resources where required.
Key Responsibilities
- Research, develop and trade systematic strategies across energy and commodity markets.
- Identify new signals, trading opportunities and potential sources of alpha.
- Take strategies from initial idea through research, backtesting, implementation and live trading.
- Take responsibility for trading decisions, risk, P&L and strategy performance.
- Build quantitative models, algorithms and trading tools using Python.
- Develop and improve research and backtesting frameworks using historical and real-time market data.
- Apply statistical and mathematical techniques to market behaviour, pricing dynamics and signal generation.
- Account for transaction costs, liquidity, slippage, execution constraints and overfitting when evaluating strategies.
- Monitor live strategies, P&L, risk, alpha decay and changing market regimes.
- Work alongside quantitative researchers, forecasters, data engineers, DevOps and existing traders to develop the wider trading capability.
- Help determine the technology, data and infrastructure required as the systematic desk develops.
- Potentially help build and grow the wider team as the trading operation scales.
- Play a meaningful role in shaping the strategic direction of the systematic trading business.
About You
We're looking for a hands‑on Quantitative Trader who combines trading judgement, quantitative research capability and strong technical understanding.
This could particularly suit someone currently within an energy or commodity trading business who has developed strong trading and quantitative experience but wants the opportunity to build something of their own rather than remain one person within a large established desk.
You should be attracted by the opportunity to take greater responsibility, work in a faster‑moving environment and participate in the longer‑term growth of the business.
You will ideally have:
- Professional experience within quantitative, systematic or algorithmic trading.
- Genuine hands‑on experience trading and taking responsibility for risk and P&L.
- Experience researching and backtesting quantitative trading strategies.
- Strong Python skills and the ability to develop your own quantitative research and trading tools.
- Strong mathematics, statistics, time‑series analysis and quantitative modelling knowledge.
- Experience identifying and validating potential sources of alpha.
- Understanding of execution, position sizing, portfolio construction and risk management.
- Experience analysing and improving strategies once deployed into live trading.
- Strong understanding of how data and technology support a systematic trading operation.
- A quantitative academic background such as Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering or Financial Engineering.
- Energy or commodity trading experience is highly desirable, particularly within European power and gas.
- An entrepreneurial, hands‑on mindset and genuine appetite for working within a growing business.
- Motivation to build a trading capability rather than simply inherit an established platform.
Relevant backgrounds could include energy trading businesses, commodity trading houses, proprietary trading firms, hedge funds or other quantitative trading environments.
What's On Offer
- Potential equity participation for the right individual.
- Opportunity to participate directly in the longer‑term value created by the business.
- Potential performance/P&L‑related upside.
- Hybrid working, currently expected to be approximately one day per week in the office.
- Significant autonomy over strategy research and trading.
- Existing quantitative, forecasting, data engineering and technical capabilities to work alongside.
- Opportunity to help build the systematic trading function from the ground up.
- Scope to influence future technology, infrastructure and hiring requirements.
- Genuine ownership and direct exposure to European energy markets.
- Opportunity for the role and team to grow significantly alongside the trading business.
If you're currently operating within quantitative or systematic trading and are looking for the opportunity to build, trade and take genuine ownership within an entrepreneurial energy business, we'd like to hear from you.
