6 month initial contract, expected to extend Outside IR35. 2 to 3 days per week initially, reducing as the programme matures. Remote with occasional UK site visits. Immediate start available.

As part of their growth strategy, our client, one of the UK's largest EV charging networks, is deploying Battery Energy Storage Systems across a significant multi-site estate, with the primary objectives of reducing grid connection costs and increasing charging capacity at constrained sites.

The BESS Strategic Advisor will act as the technical and commercial expert voice across the business's battery storage programme. Working at an advisory level, you will provide independent guidance on technology selection, procurement strategy, supplier assessment and operational planning, helping the organisation make well-informed decisions as it scales its BESS portfolio. Installations sit in the 250kWh to 1MWh range, with use cases centred on demand-side management, peak shaving and load management.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Advise on BESS technology selection, supplier assessment and procurement strategy across the UK market.
  • Provide independent review of supplier proposals, contracts, warranties and performance guarantees.
  • Guide the business on battery performance benchmarks, degradation profiles and failure rates across suppliers and chemistries.
  • Advise on system sizing and configuration relative to site demand profiles and grid connection constraints.
  • Guide the approach to energy optimisation platforms, including the commercial trade-offs between outsourced and in-house strategies.
  • Advise on O&M service models, performance monitoring frameworks and long-term asset management strategy.
  • Provide guidance on G99 and G100 compliance, DNO engagement, connection applications and export limitation.
  • Review and provide independent challenge to the work of delivery contractors, consultants and technology partners.
  • Identify programme risks and provide clear recommendations on mitigation strategies.
  • Support the development of internal capability and best practice across the BESS programme.
Required Experience:
  • Proven experience advising on or delivering behind-the-meter BESS projects in the 250kWh to 1MWh range in the UK.
  • Deep knowledge of the UK battery supplier and integrator market gained through direct procurement and project experience.
  • Strong understanding of UK grid compliance requirements including G99, G100, DNO engagement and export limitation.
  • Demonstrable experience with demand-side management, peak shaving and load management as primary BESS use cases.
  • Knowledge of O&M service structures, performance monitoring and asset management for operational BESS.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical and commercial considerations clearly to senior non-specialist stakeholders.
  • UK-based with the ability to travel to sites as required.
Desirable Experience:
  • Experience advising EV charging operators, CPOs, infrastructure businesses or multi-site energy-intensive operations.
  • Background as an owner's engineer, lender's engineer or independent technical advisor on energy infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with energy optimisation platforms, flexibility markets or ancillary services.
