About the Company

Our client is a rapidly growing energy infrastructure business delivering critical decarbonisation projects across the UK. Operating at the intersection of clean energy, power infrastructure and commercial transport, the business is investing heavily in technologies that improve energy resilience, optimise power consumption and support the transition to a lower-carbon future. As part of its growth strategy, the organisation is evaluating and deploying Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across a portfolio of infrastructure projects and is seeking an experienced consultant to provide strategic, technical and project leadership support.

The Opportunity

This is a high-impact consultancy engagement supporting the development and deployment of Battery Energy Storage Systems across a growing project portfolio. Acting as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, you will help shape BESS strategy, assess project opportunities, engage suppliers and delivery partners, and provide guidance on the most effective technical and commercial solutions. This role is less focused on hands-on engineering design and more focused on project leadership, technical decision-making, supplier management and programme delivery. The successful consultant will bring practical experience delivering BESS projects and will be able to provide clear recommendations on what should be pursued, how projects should be structured and how risks can be managed throughout delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic guidance on the deployment of Battery Energy Storage Systems across multiple projects
  • Advise senior stakeholders on BESS technologies, suppliers, system architectures and commercial considerations
  • Review project opportunities and provide recommendations on technical and commercial viability
  • Support procurement activities, supplier selection and contract negotiations
  • Manage and coordinate external consultants, contractors and technology partners
  • Oversee project development activities from feasibility through to delivery and handover
  • Support grid connection, DNO engagement and regulatory compliance activities
  • Advise on battery sizing, system configuration, energy optimisation and operational strategies
  • Identify project risks and implement mitigation strategies
  • Monitor project performance, budgets, programmes and key milestones
  • Provide technical challenge and independent review of supplier proposals and project assumptions
  • Develop business cases and investment recommendations for senior management
  • Support the development of long-term energy storage strategy and internal capability

Required Experience

  • Proven experience delivering Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects within the UK
  • Strong understanding of battery storage technologies, system integration and energy infrastructure projects
  • Experience acting as a project manager, owner's engineer, consultant or technical advisor on energy projects
  • Experience managing suppliers, contractors and multidisciplinary delivery teams
  • Knowledge of grid connections, DNO processes, G99/G100 requirements and energy infrastructure regulations
  • Strong commercial awareness with experience evaluating project viability and supplier proposals
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience providing strategic recommendations and influencing business decisions

Desirable Experience

  • EV charging infrastructure experience
  • Renewable energy project delivery experience
