With a strong focus on technical excellence, operational efficiency and continuous improvement, the business offers an excellent opportunity to join a skilled engineering team and play a key role in managing and developing assembly operations.

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced, hands‑on Assembly Team Lead to oversee a team of skilled technicians within a growing engineering and manufacturing business based in London.

This role will involve managing the day‑to‑day assembly of complex mechanical components, equipment and engineered systems, ensuring production targets are achieved while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.

Working closely with engineering, manufacturing and quality teams, you will be responsible for coordinating assembly activities, supporting technical problem‑solving and identifying opportunities to improve production efficiency.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Mechanical Assembly Team Leader or Senior Mechanical Fitter who enjoys leading technical teams while remaining actively involved in hands‑on engineering and manufacturing activities.

Key Responsibilities

Assembly Operations & Team Leadership

  • Lead, supervise and support a team of Assembly Technicians and Mechanical Fitters, ensuring manufacturing activities are completed safely, efficiently and to schedule.
  • Plan and coordinate daily assembly workloads, allocating resources and prioritising production requirements.
  • Oversee the assembly, fitting and integration of mechanical components, sub‑assemblies and complete engineered systems.
  • Ensure production orders and assembly activities are completed within agreed timescales and quality requirements.
  • Provide hands‑on technical support during complex assembly activities and assist with mechanical fitting when required.
  • Oversee the safe use of workshop equipment, lifting equipment and associated assembly tools.
  • Monitor production progress, identify potential delays and implement practical solutions to maintain workflow.
  • Support engineering teams with prototype builds, development assemblies and technical improvements when required.

Quality & Continuous Improvement

  • Ensure components and assemblies meet required quality standards throughout the manufacturing process.
  • Carry out and oversee inspections during assembly activities to identify defects and prevent unnecessary rework.
  • Work closely with quality and engineering teams to resolve assembly‑related issues.
  • Provide practical feedback to design and manufacturing engineers to improve product designs, assembly methods and manufacturability.
  • Identify opportunities to improve assembly processes, productivity and operational efficiency.
  • Promote a culture of quality, accountability and continuous improvement across the assembly team.

Health, Safety & Workshop Management

  • Ensure all assembly activities are carried out in accordance with relevant health and safety procedures.
  • Promote safe working practices and provide guidance to technicians on equipment operation and workshop safety.
  • Oversee the safe handling, movement and installation of heavy components and assemblies.
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness, organisation and housekeeping within assembly areas.
  • Ensure tools, equipment and workstations are maintained and available to support efficient production.
  • Support the development of safe working procedures and improvements to workshop operations.
  • Provide regular updates to senior management on assembly progress, production performance and operational challenges.
  • Work collaboratively with manufacturing, engineering and quality teams to ensure efficient production workflows.
  • Support the development and training of Assembly Technicians, providing technical guidance and mentorship.
  • Identify resource requirements, production bottlenecks and opportunities to improve team performance.

Skills & Experience

  • Approximately 4–8 years' experience within an industrial manufacturing, mechanical assembly or engineering environment.
  • At least 2–4 years' experience supervising or managing technical teams, ideally Mechanical Fitters or Assembly Technicians.
  • Strong hands‑on background in mechanical assembly, fitting or industrial equipment manufacturing.
  • Experience overseeing the assembly of mechanical components, equipment or complex engineered systems.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications and assembly instructions.
  • Experience planning workloads, coordinating assembly activities and managing production priorities.
  • Good understanding of manufacturing quality control, inspection procedures and safe working practices.
  • Strong leadership, communication and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to monitor production progress and report effectively to senior management.
  • A practical, hands‑on approach to team leadership and continuous improvement.
  • Experience managing assembly teams within industrial machinery, mechanical engineering or equipment manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with complex mechanical or electro‑mechanical assemblies.
  • Experience using lifting equipment, gantry cranes or other industrial material‑handling equipment.
  • Exposure to prototype development, low‑volume manufacturing or new product introduction.
  • Experience working closely with design and manufacturing engineers to improve assembly processes.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing, production efficiency and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Previous experience supporting manufacturing expansion or increasing production volumes.
  • A proactive leadership style with the ability to support technicians in resolving complex technical challenges.

What's on Offer

  • Competitive salary of £50,000–£70,000 depending on experience.
  • Equity or share option opportunities.
  • Generous annual leave arrangements.
  • Relocation support where applicable.
  • Opportunity to lead and develop a skilled technical assembly team.
  • The chance to work on technically challenging engineering and manufacturing projects.
