To provide specialist clinical care and preventative treatment without direct supervision to patients attending the specialist Dental Hospital services for secondary or tertiary care. To carry out dental treatment on these patients to a level of competence as directed by the Dental Act and its amendments. Main contact is with hospital staff and patients. Patient groups as a priority are adults and children with special needs, including medically compromised patients, anxious patients and patients with challenging behaviour.

Main duties of the job

  • Carrying out the full range of treatments currently permitted under the General Dental Council regulations.
  • Specific duties may only be undertaken if trained and competent to do so.
  • Treatment may be carried out within hospital dental departments and wards or by domiciliary treatment visits, if necessary.
  • Treatment is provided following a prescribed course of treatment as directed by a registered dentist.

Job responsibilities

  • Education of patients on the causes and prevention of periodontal diseases and dental caries.
  • Identification of risk factors for dental diseases, including medical and social risk factors and provision of appropriate counselling advice, including: medical history, diet analysis and nutritional guidance, advice in the use of fluoride agents, benefits of smoking cessation and accessing cessation services.
  • Motivate patients to maintain a high standard of oral hygiene.
  • Monitor patients progress using appropriate indices (bleeding and plaque indices; detailed pocket charting; mobility index; furcation index).
  • Perform supra- and subgingival scaling of teeth including polishing; provision of comprehensive periodontal root debridement therapy; thorough prophylaxis including finishing and polishing of restorations.
  • Home care instructions for artificial prostheses; design home care plans; liaise with carers of special needs groups.
  • Selection and application of prophylactic materials and medicaments; application of preventative fissure sealants.
  • Administration of local infiltration analgesia; replacement of crowns with temporary cement in emergencies.
  • Preparation of orthodontic patients pre-treatment; management of orthodontic patients including removal of excess bonding cement; taking impressions; taking intraoral and extraoral radiographs; maintain core knowledge per Trust guidelines.
  • Take medical histories; liaise with prescribing dentist; adjust treatment plans as needed.
  • Administer prophylactic antibiotic cover as necessary for medically compromised patients; clarify INR readings.
  • Teaching and supervision of BDS degree students; communicate treatment requirements to obtain informed consent.
  • Administration of inferior dental block analgesia under prescription or PGD if trained; treat patients under conscious sedation if required with a dentist in the room.
  • Other duties include working within prescribed treatment plans, exercising professional judgement, and accountability for professional actions.

General duties

  • Basic first aid and resuscitation training; comply with radiography, IRMER, infection control policies.
  • Assess new instruments; engage in manual handling training; participate in team briefings and peer reviews.
  • Support clinical team in service development; participate in audits, CPD, and policy development.
  • Ensure efficient use of resources; manage workload and appointments; monitor referrals.
  • Contribute to quality improvement and service development; environmental considerations and waste reduction.
  • To undertake other duties commensurate with this grade of post in agreement with the line manager.

Person Specification

  • Essential Qualifications / training: Degree in Dental Hygiene/Therapy; Compulsory annual GDC registration; personal indemnity insurance; current GDC registration; Inferior dental nerve block analgesia; Local infiltration analgesia.
  • Desirable: Temporary dressings; recementing crowns; dental radiography; dental impressions.
  • Experience: Extensive experience with special needs groups; medically compromised patients and diverse abilities/behaviour.
  • Desirable: Experience with dental software packages.
  • Skills/Knowledge: Excellent communication and empathy; problem solving; multidisciplinary teamwork; Knowledge of current dental hygiene practice; highly specialist manual dexterity; ability to work under pressure; Analytical and organizational skills; computer literate; workload assessment; supervision of dental nurses; participate in audits and research; Ability to teach BDS students; provide patient counselling; keep policies up to date.
  • Desirable: Management of patients with complex surgical histories; knowledge of HIV, transplants, dermatological conditions; dental software.
  • Personal qualities: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; professional; team player; problem solving; prioritising and planning; commitment to development; Flexible, motivated, empathetic; willing to work in other areas; capable of direct supervision and clinical decisions; Ability to work in confined spaces; safe use of dental equipment.
