Job Summary
Would you like to join a small team of dietitians working in a novel and exciting way? Are you keen to develop your management and leadership skills and support the cost‑effective use of nutrition products across Primary Care and Community settings? Birmingham Community Nutrition has a vacancy in our Prescribing Support Service and is looking for someone like you to develop your career and build on your existing skills.
This award‑winning team works directly with Care Homes, GP Practices and their staff and with the ICB Medicines Management team to deliver an invaluable service making sure the right patients receive the right products. Embedded with the Nutrition & Dietetic service but working closely with Primary Care and the ICB, you will collaborate with other experienced Dietitians to deliver this service and will have the professional support and leadership of the Dietetic Service Leads.
Responsibilities
- Lead on the delivery of the team’s objectives; help set the direction of the team and manage the day‑to‑day operational side of the team, including line management of one Band 5 Dietitian and one Band 4 Dietetic Assistant Practitioner.
- Adhere to the standards of conduct, performance and ethics and the dietitians standards of proficiency of the Health Professions Council and provide leadership to staff to do the same.
- Be aware of your level of responsibility and accountability within the wider Nutrition and Dietetic service, and designated Commissioning areas, being guided by policies, procedures and the support of peers, and ensure your team do the same.
- Be responsible for maintaining and demonstrating own competence to practice through participation in appraisal process and CPD within the framework of the professional portfolio.
- Work with the Head of Birmingham Community Nutrition in taking responsibility for the strategic development and promotion of the ONS Prescribing Project (ONSP) and Pan‑Birmingham Nutrition Formulary across Birmingham, and the West Midlands Region, taking into account national guidelines and the needs of the diverse local population.
Qualifications & Training
- Degree in Nutrition & Dietetics (or equivalent)
- Registered with Health Professionals Council
- Evidence of Continual Professional Development
- Postgraduate degree Dietetics (desirable)
Experience
- Evidence of successful project management
- Significant experience of working in community settings / primary care
- Significant experience of clinical dietetics at a senior grade including nutrition support
- Can demonstrate successful project management skills
- Significant experience of training other staff groups at all educational levels/abilities
- Significant experience of dietetic leadership (desirable)
Skills & Knowledge
- Ability to demonstrate verbal communication skills
- Ability to produce legible communication and reports
- Excellent presentation skills
- Ability to negotiate and influence assertively
- Ability to demonstrate effective multi‑agency and multi‑professional working
- Ability to deal sensitively with patients experiencing distressing life‑changing conditions
- Ability to challenge performance and provide constructive feedback
- Ability to work with people from a variety of backgrounds
- Ability to investigate, interpret, analyse, evaluate and present complex information
- Knowledge of recent NHS publications and their impact on dietetics (desirable)
- Knowledge of future proposals for NHS (desirable)
- Ability to demonstrate leadership skills (desirable)
- Ability to use information technology to maximise personal and service effectiveness (desirable)
- Ability to use equipment to assess nutritional status accurately, including skin fold callipers and grip strength dynamometer (desirable)
Other Job Requirements
- Ability to travel to different venues around the City
- To be able to transport equipment necessary for the role e.g. wheelchair scales (desirable)
