This job advert is for a Band 4 Physiotherapy Assistant within the Children's Community Physiotherapy service. The successful applicant will have experience as an Allied Health professional support worker or significant experience of working with children in health/social care or educational settings. Candidates should be passionate about supporting children with physical and learning needs to reach their therapy goals. It is a community post, working with a caseload of children and young people from across Birmingham with neurological and developmental conditions. The role involves working within the community environment, under the guidance of registered Physiotherapists.

The post is based at Soho Health Centre, Soho Road, Birmingham, B21 9RY. Access to reliable transport or a driving licence and car is preferred as the post-holder may be required to transport therapy equipment.

Job Responsibilities

  • To plan and provide care plans to meet prior agreed goals and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions using appropriate outcome measures in line with the therapy outcome measure framework and make any necessary modifications.
  • The post holder will plan, provide and adapt therapeutic activity within the framework set by the physiotherapist and within the post holder's competencies.
  • To work without direct supervision in the selection, planning, and implementation of treatment activities, developing and altering treatment plans according to the child's needs and rate of progress.
  • To prioritise, plan and organise daily workload, ensuring tasks and on-going workload priorities are completed within agreed timescales, with changes discussed and agreed with the line manager.
  • To teach and advise parents, educational staff and other carers on aspects of handling, positioning and exercise programmes to reinforce the physiotherapy care plan objectives.
  • To carry out group activities as appropriate, working to physiotherapy care plan/treatment objectives.
  • To carry out appropriate joint visits with other members of the multidisciplinary team (e.g., Early Years Support Services, Physical Disabilities Support Services), liaising with the named physiotherapist as appropriate.
  • To run clinics/appointments for a specified group of children with support from a PT as required, including administration and liaison with other agencies/professionals as appropriate.
  • To communicate effectively with children, carers and professionals, using a range of communication skills and accessing alternative communication systems where necessary.
  • To alert the appropriate physiotherapist of any changes in a child's situation or general condition. Assess progress, report findings and make suggestions as required.
  • To be responsible for ordering loan equipment and assist in ordering non-standard equipment.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Essential: NVQ Level 3/BTEC in a health, education or social care (or equivalent training) or Physiotherapy Access course.
  • Desirable: Evidence of recent study/training in paediatrics.

Experience

  • Significant prior experience as an Allied Health professional support worker or relevant work experience.
  • Significant experience of applying basic care skills in a community/clinical/educational setting.
  • Experience of working independently and managing own time while prioritising activities.
  • Experience of working with a child/children with a disability.
  • Experience of providing a clerical support service within a team environment.

Skills/Knowledge

  • Ability to communicate verbally with a variety of parties.
  • Competent in generating written communication that is relevant, concise, accurate and legible.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Ability to organise own workload.
  • Knowledge and experience of IT systems.

Personal Qualities

  • Able to demonstrate awareness of sensitivity to the needs of individuals from minority groups.
  • Flexible team player, able to work on own initiative, with the ability to establish good working relationships with colleagues.
  • Ability to travel independently to various work locations and transport equipment on occasion.
