An exciting opportunity is available for a Band 3 Healthcare Support Worker post in the Community Respiratory Team of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will work alongside the overall clinical team supporting Pulmonary Rehabilitation, admission avoidance, assisted discharge, and diagnostic spirometry pathways.
Job Summary
To work as part of the Respiratory Team, carrying out a wide range of duties under the direction of senior team members, maintaining a high quality service to patients and carers.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide a high standard of care to patients working in accordance with trust policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Communicate daily with Senior Respiratory Team members to ensure accurate workload instructions and report back patient information.
- Provide support and advice to patients and carers under direction of senior team member and contribute to the coordination of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programme where required.
- Assist in interventions and treatment, including supporting biomedical investigations such as obtaining clinic samples; perform procedures such as measuring patient height and weight, blood pressure and oxygen saturation; demonstrate and teach inhaler device techniques; collect sputum samples; prepare and maintain the clinical environment, including monitoring stock levels.
- Decontaminate equipment in accordance with national strategy.
- Raise awareness of health promotion issues such as smoking cessation.
- Attend and participate in team and professional meetings and keep up‑to‑date with current professional issues.
- Maintain accurate, timely and legible records appropriate to the level of practice.
- Undertake general office and administration duties as required.
- Work with the Respiratory Team to maintain high standards of care following Trust policies and procedures.
- Participate in Health Promotion activities (e.g., attending health events).
- Promote the rights of and recognise and support the diversity of patients.
- Undertake other duties commensurate with this grade in agreement with the line manager.
- Minimise the Trust’s environmental impact by recycling, turning off lights and equipment when not in use, reducing paper waste, reporting faults and heating/cooling concerns, and considering the environmental impact of purchases.
Person Specification
Qualifications/Training: NVQ level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent; respiratory experience and understanding of respiratory conditions and management.
Experience: Dealing with members of the public; working in a clinic or home environment; experience in a health/social care setting.
Skills and Knowledge: Genuine interest in respiratory care; understanding the role of a Health Care Support Worker; safe practice and awareness of health and safety issues; strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work as part of a team and organise own workload; ability to reflect on scope and limits of role and raise concerns; commitment to attend study days and maintain up‑to‑date, safe practice.
Desirable: Awareness of the needs of ethnic minority clients and carers; experience of primary care setting; computer skills.
Personal Qualities: Genuine interest in community health care; commitment to teamwork; flexibility within the changing NHS environment; learning ability and applying knowledge.
Other job requirements: independently mobile; access to own vehicle to drive across BCHC/Respiratory locations.
