Salary

Salary will be commensurate with the level of education and experience of the recommended candidate. Range: Career Path I: $47,000 - $66,500 Career Path II: $48,500 - $90,500

Benefits

Insurance: This position is eligible for medical, dental and vision insurance coverage on the employee, spouse, and eligible dependents. The employee's insurance will be effective on the first of month following the hire date. EVSC also offers employees an opportunity for life insurance and long term disability coverage.

Retirement: As a contract teacher, this position will automatically be enrolled in the Teacher Retirement Fund (TRF) through the state of Indiana, which includes a defined benefit (Pension) as well as an Annuity Savings Account (ASA). In addition, this position is eligible to enroll in a 401(a) retirement investment plan, a 403(b) Match Program, and a tax‑free post‑retirement medical expense account (VEBA).

Additional Benefits: Employees enrolled in an EVSC medical insurance plan are eligible to use our Health & Wellness Centers conveniently located within the community. These are no-cost health clinics that provide primary care treatment, generic prescription medications (at no cost), physicals, health screenings, and labs. Accumulated sick leave days and personal business days will be provided under this position as well. Additionally, EVSC employees have access to EVSC Wee Care, our employee‑only early learning centers.

Position Overview

The special education teacher is responsible for planning and implementing goals of the students Individual Education Program (IEP).

Qualification Requirements

An individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Follows legal requirements as dictated by state and federal statutes.
  • Instructs individuals and groups in special education skill areas.
  • Plans curriculum, lessons, and special education programs and teaching methods.
  • Evaluates and monitors student progress.
  • Maintains physical environment of the classroom.
  • Prepares report cards, educational records, classroom observation records, and other forms.
  • Maintains communication system with parents/caregivers of classroom students.
  • Plans individual educational programs designed to meet student's needs and conform to state and federal laws.
  • Assumes responsibility for the development and implementation of specific objectives to meet the needs of each individual student.

Job Specific Skills and Abilities

  • The ability to interact with public and other staff is required.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community.
  • Ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervises students and special education assistants for instruction purposes.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's degree from an accredited university.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Valid teaching certificate with appropriate special education endorsement.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, managers, employees, clients, customers, and/or the general public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to apply financial concepts and statistical inferences.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to use available information and develop long‑term and short‑term goals and objectives.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk, see, and hear, (corrected or uncorrected). The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift 40 pounds or more individually and/or push/pull up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The noise level in the environment is variable depending upon the activities in the environment. The employee must constantly work to meet deadlines. Certain teaching positions in special education dealing with more severely involved students will be at greater risk to exposure to infection than the average person; whereas, teachers working with behaviorally disordered students will be more involved with confrontational and assaultive behaviors.
