2 x AI Systems Engineer - Python & Agentic Development - Hampshire - Hybrid, minimum three days per week onsite £65,000-£70,000 - Permanent | Two positions available

We are supporting a market-leading, regulated consumer services group as it establishes a new AI Engineering & Orchestration capability within IT.

This is not a traditional machine learning role, nor is it simply a Python developer position with access to AI tools.

We're looking for experienced software engineers who can combine strong engineering judgement with an AI-native approach to development.

You'll design solutions, break complex requirements into deliverable tasks, direct AI agents through the development life cycle and rigorously validate the outputs they produce.

While AI will accelerate delivery, you will remain accountable for the quality, security, performance and maintainability of every solution.

  • What you'll be doing
  • Designing software solutions and contributing to technical architecture
  • Translating requirements into clear, deliverable technical tasks
  • Directing AI agents to build, test, document and improve software
  • Reviewing and refining agent-generated code and technical artefacts
  • Developing Python applications, Back End services, APIs and automations
  • Building integrations between internal systems and third-party platforms
  • Creating reusable components rather than short-term, one-off solutions
  • Defining testing, code-quality and governance controls for AI-assisted delivery
  • Owning solutions through deployment, monitoring, support and continuous improvement
  • Working closely with Business Systems Analysts and operational stakeholders
  • What we re looking for
  • Strong commercial software engineering experience
  • Production-level Python development and troubleshooting skills
  • Experience building and consuming REST APIs
  • Good SQL and database knowledge
  • Strong understanding of testing, debugging and maintainable code design
  • Experience with Git, pull requests, code reviews and continuous integration
  • Ability to assess architecture, security, performance and technical risk
  • Experience translating business requirements into practical technical solutions
  • The confidence to challenge AI-generated outputs rather than accept them at face value
  • It would be useful if you also have experience with some of the following:
  • Fast API, Flask or similar Python frameworks
  • Java Script, Type Script or React
  • Docker, cloud-hosted environments and CI/CD pipelines
  • Message queues or event-driven architecture
  • Business systems integration and workflow automation
  • AI coding agents or governed AI-assisted software delivery

Your job title is less important than your engineering foundations.

We re looking for someone who understands how robust software should be designed and delivered, and who can use AI agents to increase pace without compromising standards.

This is an opportunity to help shape a new capability from the beginning, influence engineering practices and work on solutions that will make a measurable difference across the organisation.
