An exciting opportunity awaits you as Head of Engineering Projects in our Rolling Stock team. The Head of Engineering Projects leads the delivery of rolling stock projects and modifications across the engineering function, including new fleet initiatives requiring specialist technical input. Working cross‑functionally at a senior level, the role ensures effective coordination, clear visibility of engineering workstreams, and consistent communication of progress to stakeholders. Acting as deputy to the Head of Engineering Safety, the position also oversees all engineering change activities for EIL and THIF rolling stock, ensuring compliance and robust governance across the project lifecycle. This is a permanent role based at our Temple Mills depot in Leyton, London.

Requirements
- Lead the planning and delivery of multiple rolling stock engineering projects, ensuring compliance with agreed cost, quality, safety and timescale targets.
- Drive fleet performance improvements, delivering increased reliability, availability and measurable cost reductions while protecting BAU operations.
- Introduce fleet projects smoothly into Engineering and the wider business, ensuring optimal resource use and strong stakeholder engagement.
- Provide senior technical leadership, including liaison with external partners and compliance with all applicable European rolling stock standards and legislation.
- Develop and support robust business cases and whole‑life cost models aligned to strategic objectives.
- Deputise for the Head of Engineering as required, holding responsibility for engineering change, safety approvals, certifications and technical governance.
- Participate in the engineering on‑call rota and act responsibly in line with company policies, processes and safety standards.
You’ll need...
- Chartered Engineer status with a recognised Engineering Institute, supported by a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an Engineering discipline (EQF Level 7 or equivalent).
- Extensive knowledge of Rolling Stock Systems (or similar) with proven experience delivering projects ranging from minor modifications to major upgrades, overhauls, and life‑extension or end‑of‑life risk management activities, without impact to fleet BAU availability.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully deliver multiple projects simultaneously, to agreed quality standards, timescales, and budgets.
- Strong capability in risk identification, mitigation, and stakeholder management, ensuring effective delivery in complex operational environments.
- Experience identifying and managing contractual obligations, including penalties and Liquidated Damages (LDs).
- High level of autonomy, with experience developing robust business cases in line with organisational governance processes and securing required funding and resources.
- Proven ability to produce clear, executive‑level project reporting, with well‑defined risks, mitigations, and delivery status.
- Recognised project management practitioner, holding PMP, APM, PRINCE2 (or equivalent).
