The Operations Controller will sit within the operations department. You will plan, control and report on the movement of trains on and off the depot and within the depot boundaries including operation of the MCS Workstation, carriage washing plant and other signalling equipment provided. This is an exciting permanent position based onsite in our Temple Mills Depot reporting to Operations Manager - TMI. The Operations Controller role is a shift work position so applicants will need to be prepared to work to a roster that will include 24/7 operations through a variety of shifts.
Requirements:
- Plans, controls and reports on the movement of trains on and off the depot and within the depot boundaries including operation of the MCS Workstation, carriage washing plant and other signalling equipment provided.
- Ensures safety of staff, contractors, visitors, and customers by implementing operating rules and procedures and by audits, inspections, assessments, briefings and training in accordance with company procedures.
- Liaises with colleagues at St Pancras and others to arrange arrival and departure of rolling stock and utilisation of drivers.
- Implements accident and emergency procedures including investigating and reporting on operational incidents and near misses, interviewing persons involved and witnesses, invoking 'for cause' screening as required by company policy on drugs and alcohol and recommending changes and developments to depot operating procedures as required.
- Coordinates the activities of contractors providing services in connection with train operations including security teams and staff transport to and from site and communicating with and co-ordinating the activities of external authorities and emergency services on operational and emergency matters affecting TMI.
- Plans and controls the possessions for infrastructure repairs and maintenance and reporting and progressing the repair of depot infrastructure including permanent way, signalling, operational telecommunications and radio systems, overhead line in accordance with current rules and procedures.
- Plans and controls the maintenance of the Class 08 locomotive and matchwagons, co-ordinating with the contracted suppliers of the maintenance service to ensure that the Class 08 locomotive and matchwagons are maintained in accordance with the Maintenance Plan.
- Audits and monitors shunting and movements activities and assessing the competency of depot staff employed on shunting and movements duties in accordance with company procedures to ensure compliance with current operational and safety standards.
- Maintains effective communications with third party customers in conjunction with Production Control and the Service Delivery Manager in order to receive and despatch rolling stock and deal with unplanned events in accordance with contract terms.
- Carries out yard safety equipment checks at intervals laid down in local procedures.
You will need:
- A good general standard of secondary education; the incumbent must be numerate, literate and able to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
- The incumbent must be IT literate and able to use PCs and mainframe computer systems.
- Experience in a railway or similar transport operating or maintenance environment is required to enable the incumbent to make real time decisions and judgements based on multiple information sources and the knowledge and understanding of railway operating rules and procedures.
- Sufficient experience to enable the incumbent to rapidly gather and assimilate information from multiple sources and to make reasoned judgements and decisions under pressure and in potentially hazardous situations is essential.
- Good attention to detail with the ability to work well under pressure.
- Self-motivated, with the ability to work on your own as well as within a team.
