The Night Shift Supervisor is responsible for the overall management and performance of night shift production operations, ensuring that production targets, quality standards, staffing levels, and health & safety requirements are met in line with the agreed production plan. The role holds full accountability for site operations during the night shift, providing leadership, decision‑making, and operational control, and ensuring effective communication and handover to the day shift management team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and control all night shift production activities to ensure delivery against the production plan.
  • React to programme changes and resolve operational issues during the night shift, escalating where necessary.
  • Use the MRP system (123insight) to manage works orders, bookings, reporting, stock accuracy and scrap.
  • Use the production screens to record daily output, hours and downtime, ensuring this is accurate and up to date.
  • Ensure production lines are correctly set up and ready prior to manufacture.
  • Ensure materials are available and replenished in a timely manner.
  • Monitor output, efficiency, downtime, and quality throughout the shift and provide feedback to the team.
  • Ensure all products are manufactured in line with company quality standards, GMP requirements, and work instructions.
  • Oversee in‑process checks and ensure documentation is accurately completed.
  • Lead, motivate, and manage night shift line leaders and operators, and work closely with the setter.
  • Manage staffing levels, attendance, holidays, return‑to‑work meetings, and absenteeism.
  • Ensure all operators are trained, competent, and signed off prior to commencing production.
  • Maintain accurate training records and support inductions for new starters.
  • Champion health, safety, environmental, and 5S standards across the night shift.
  • Act as the senior site representative during nights and provide a structured handover to day shift management.

Knowledge, Experience, Qualifications

  • Knowledge
    • Working knowledge of manufacturing operations, production planning, and shift‑based management.
    • Good understanding of GMP requirements, quality systems, and cleanroom controls within a regulated manufacturing environment.
    • Knowledge of health & safety legislation, risk assessments, and safe systems of work.
    • Understanding of MRP systems (e.g. 123insight) and production reporting requirements.
    • Aware of continuous improvement tools such as 5S, waste reduction, and efficiency improvement techniques.
  • Experience
    • Proven experience in a manufacturing leadership role, such as Production Manager, Shift Manager, or Supervisor.
    • Demonstrable experience managing teams on a night shift or off‑shift operation, with accountability for output and performance.
    • Experience of people management, including attendance management, return‑to‑work meetings, training, and performance management.
    • Experience working in a regulated environment (medical devices, pharmaceutical, aerospace, or similar).
    • Experience of responding to production issues independently and making decisions outside normal day‑shift support structures.
  • Qualifications
    • Relevant technical, engineering, manufacturing, or operational qualification (or equivalent experience).
    • Recognised leadership or management qualification (desirable).
    • Health & Safety training (e.g. IOSH or equivalent – desirable).
    • GMP or quality system training (desirable).

  • Cleanroom Environment – Keep to cleanroom regulations as per training at all times.
  • Medical devices are made under controlled GMP conditions, cleanroom environments to ensure there is no contamination in a hospital or surgical environment.
  • It is essential you adhere to strict regulations when working within the cleanrooms.
