We are supporting a leading global technology organisation in hiring an AI Engineer to join their advanced research and development team in Edinburgh. This AI Engineer role sits at the intersection of multimodal AI, geospatial systems, and edge computing, focusing on building next-generation intelligent mapping and spatial reasoning systems.

The AI Engineer will help develop foundation models and AI-driven systems that enable consumer devices to better understand and interact with the physical world.

  • Develop and optimise multimodal foundation models for deployment on edge and consumer-grade hardware
  • Design and build spatial intelligence systems that convert geospatial and environmental data into structured, LLM-ready formats
  • Develop high-performance vector search and retrieval systems for distributed spatial datasets
  • Build semantic and thematic mapping pipelines to enrich traditional mapping systems with real-time contextual intelligence
  • Create working prototypes and demos to validate new AI concepts and model capabilities
  • Collaborate with research and engineering teams to translate AI research into production-ready systems

PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Robotics, or equivalent practical experience.

Strong experience with LLMs, foundation models, or multimodal AI systems.

Experience working with geospatial or spatial data is highly desirable.

Familiarity with edge AI deployment and model optimisation (e.g., Strong programming skills in Python, with experience in orchestration frameworks such as LangGraph, AutoGen, or Pydantic).

This is a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge AI systems that combine spatial intelligence, multimodal modelling, and edge deployment. You will contribute to the development of next-generation intelligent mapping technologies and AI systems designed to run directly on consumer devices, shaping how users interact with the physical world through AI.

We are looking for a highly technical, systems-oriented AI engineer who is comfortable working across research and production environments. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in LLM-based systems and a clear interest in spatial data, retrieval systems, and edge AI constraints.

Candidates with purely theoretical ML backgrounds or cloud-only SaaS experience are unlikely to be suitable for this position.
