The Principal Directorate Administration of the Reserve Funds contributes to the long-term financial stability of the European Patent Organisation by assuming responsibility for the investment activities related to the Reserve Funds for Pensions and Social Security (RFPSS). In view of the size of the Reserve Funds, currently valued at nearly EUR 15bn, the results achieved by the management of the investments of the RFPSS are of vital importance for the financial health of the Organisation.

The assets of the RFPSS are invested in a broad range of liquid asset classes with a focus on equities and fixed income. They are managed in-house, both by means of direct investments and by using third-party vehicles such as investment funds.

The Fund Administrator, appointed by the Administrative Council, oversees the Reserve Funds and their organisational units, proposing the Investment Beliefs, Investment Guidelines, Investment Strategy, Strategic Asset Allocation and other implementing rules to the Supervisory Board.

The Principal Directorate, based in Munich, consists of four units: Portfolio Management; Investment Analytics and Risk and Process Management; Accounting and Internal Control; and Administration and Operations.

We are now looking for a results-driven, bright and ambitious investment professional to join as a portfolio manager in the Directorate Portfolio Management.

With us you will:

  • Conduct analyses of economic and financial market information and prepare data for investment purposes.
  • Contribute to reports on investment activity.
  • Select counterparties, carry out transactions and oversee their execution.
  • Follow market developments through contacts with financial institutions, by attending conferences etc.
  • Work in close collaboration with the other portfolio managers and deputise for them when required.

Apply if you have:

  • An in-depth understanding of financial markets and investments built on a related course of studies completed with excellent results.
  • Work experience in securities analysis and/or investment management.
  • Familiarity with standard financial market data tools, particularly Bloomberg, and preferably also Morningstar and/or MSCI Barra.
  • Knowledge of relevant programming languages (e.g. Python, R, VBA, or MATLAB) and experience of conducting backtests and data analyses.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical abilities.
  • Effective communication skills both orally and in writing.
  • Initiative and self-motivation, complemented by a genuine interest in the field.
  • An enthusiastic approach to teamwork and the ability to complete multiple tasks within tight deadlines.

  • Generally, an excellent knowledge (at least C1) of one official language (English, French and German) and ability to understand the other two; alternatively, excellent knowledge (at least C1) of at least one official language (in such cases, the willingness to learn the missing language(s) and to reach level B2 within a set time frame would be required).
  • Citizenship of one of the member states of the European Patent Organisation.
