About the Team
We are looking for a Software Engineer with a strong record in software development who is interested in developing services for one of the most internationally used data resources in biological science, UniProt. Our team is dynamic and interdisciplinary, comprising talented and enthusiastic software engineers and bioinformaticians working closely together with biologists and scientists. The UniProt resource is one of the most internationally used protein databases, serving a large and diverse research community in genomics, proteins, and proteomics.
Duties & Responsibilities
As part of your daily work, you will design and develop software and APIs for the UniProt data services and website, providing protein information to the scientific community and computational biologists. You will also work on the design, maintenance, and monitoring of the website cloud infrastructure. Scalability will be an important feature of your clear, concise, well‑tested, and documented code. You will be interested in applying analytic engines and technical approaches to distributed processing of big data, and you will be able to work towards tight deadlines.
Requirements
- A degree in Computer Science or a related discipline
- At least 3 years of professional experience in web back‑end development
- Experience in web cloud infrastructure
- Experience in Agile processes
- Good communication skills
- Experience in Java and/or Python development
- Experience in developing RESTful services
- Experience in developing applications using SpringBoot
- Experience in developing web infrastructure (Solr, Kubernetes)
- Experience with key‑value stores
- Experience in git and basic Unix commands
Desirable
- Experience with large‑data processing technologies (Apache Spark)
Other Helpful Information
- Hybrid Working: At EMBL‑EBI we offer hybrid working options; a dedicated desk is available daily, but our team works two days on site (Monday’s & Tuesday’s) and three days from home.
- Interviews: Introductory meetings will be held remotely starting in February 2026.
- Contract length: 3 years (project based).
- Salary: Grade 5 monthly salary starting at ÂŁ3,229 after tax but excluding pension & insurances, plus other paid benefits based on personal circumstances.
