We are seeking a technically skilled and biologically literate Scientific Database Curator to join a focused initiative on fibrosis research, hosted at EMBL-EBI in collaboration with the Saez-Rodriguez Group and GSK. This is a unique role which combines hands-on data wrangling with biological curation of transcriptomics datasets.

You will curate and integrate publicly available transcriptomics datasets relevant to fibrosis—including bulk, single-cell, and spatial data—helping support active research and therapeutic discovery.

Your role

This is a hands-on role focused on identifying, wrangling, and structuring high-value datasets for integration into Expression Atlas and Single Cell Expression Atlas, while also contributing to the thematic organisation of fibrosis-relevant data within these resources. This may include work on underlying database structures, metadata schemas, and curation flags. The role also contributes to making datasets FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) for the broader research community.

You’ll be part of a cross-functional, collaborative environment at EMBL-EBI, working closely with bioinformaticians, software developers, and researchers to refine data flows, improve tooling, and support impactful translational science. Curated datasets will also feed back into GSK’s internal infrastructure, contributing directly to cross-sector research impact.

You have

  • A degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related discipline (PhD or equivalent experience is a plus).
  • Hands-on experience wrangling transcriptomics datasets—ideally including single-cell and spatial data—from raw input to processed outputs.
  • Proficiency with Bash scripting and Git as part of your daily toolkit.
  • Familiarity with relational databases (e.g. Oracle, MySQL) and biological metadata models.
  • Strong data handling skills: extracting, cleaning, validating, and transforming metadata in structured formats (e.g. TSV, JSON).
  • A collaborative and adaptable mindset, with a willingness to learn new tools and contribute to evolving standards and workflows.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, and an ability to troubleshoot data inconsistencies or pipeline blockers.
  • Excellent written English
  • Excellent communication, time-management and organisational skills

You may also have

  • Background in fibrosis, inflammation, immunology, or tissue biology.
  • Familiarity with JSON Schema and ontology-based validation frameworks.
  • Comfort writing or adapting Python or R scripts for data wrangling and validation tasks.
  • Practical knowledge of public gene expression archives (e.g. GEO, ArrayExpress, SRA, BioStudies).
  • Experience working in an agile development environment or contributing to cross-functional teams involving developers and scientists.
  • An interest in open science practices, including working with open-source tools and publicly available datasets.

Contract length: 1 year fixed-term (project-limited funded by GSK grant). We are ideally looking for someone who can start early September 2025.

Salary: Grade 4 or Grade 5 depending on qualifications and experience, monthly salary at £2,995 or £3,229 after tax but excluding pension and health insurance contributions. Plus generous benefits.

Interviews: we plan to hold interview in August. Details will be confirmed with selected candidates.
