The Associate Director, Capability Lead is a key leadership role in each capability domain area and will work closely with the AD, Product Owner to ensure delivery is value focussed and aligned to vision, strategy, roadmap and budget. The AD will manage and oversee the system delivery lifecycle and is responsible for introducing, delivering, maintaining and continuously improving systems and services in their area, including service design, model office, service transition, product support, maintenance, service level design, reporting and stakeholder management. The capability area operates in a flat, agile, self‑organising manner comprised of many product‑aligned squads or scrums. The AD is accountable for delivering the Product Owners vision aligned to the IT department's technical strategy and direction, and for enabling teams to deliver in line with priorities set.

The capability area is an autonomous, agile‑first collection of expert individuals from different practice areas, who are jointly responsible for the introduction, delivery, maintenance and continuous improvement of the services in their domain area. The goal is to deliver and support full‑stack business systems and services that are robust, secure, stable, usable, elegant and resilient. The AD will manage multiple teams within their service area and must have considerable experience delivering and maintaining service by following solid and robust Agile principles, including hybrid resourcing with third‑party suppliers.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities

  • System Delivery: responsible for support, maintenance and development of systems in the capability area.
  • Provide leadership for development, maintenance and support of the Bank’s business systems within a capability area.
  • Co‑create best‑in‑class support and maintenance practices with peer capability areas using modern Agile principles (Scrum, SAFe, Kanban, TDD, pairing, CI/CD, A/B testing, micro‑services, DevOps).
  • Transform the internal delivery group into a metrics‑based, lean start‑up organisation, working with the business and Product Owner to establish shared ownership.
  • Define success criteria, maintain a common backlog view, plan effectively and manage timeline for delivery.
  • Work with the Head of QA to ensure effective quality assurance and overall integrity of support and development.
  • Maintain backlog, define acceptance criteria, estimate and track velocity.
  • Manage supply and demand to align future demand with expectations.
  • Accountable for platforms meeting the Bank’s SLAs for production service and for designing and implementing service‑level reporting for key stakeholders.
  • Manage interactions with product teams and stakeholders across business and IT to ensure delivery backlogs meet non‑functional, operational support, and service‑level reporting requirements.
  • Contribute to IT policies and standards, ensuring adherence and applying controls through the IT risk management framework.
  • Improve IT general control landscape, design preventative controls and automate to reduce manual controls.
  • Lead and manage teams in a hybrid staff/outsourced structure and coordinate third‑party contributions through appropriate Agile approaches.
  • Plan, forecast, and manage within set budget, identifying and implementing modernisation and efficiency opportunities through continuous improvement and automation.
  • Report on progress and delivery cadence of each team (burn‑up, burndown, velocity, quality).
  • Create a culture that eliminates technical debt and generates backlogs and business cases for delivery.

People Management:

  • Coach, mentor and direct team members in delivering high‑quality Agile practices.
  • Create a culture where all team members are responsible for quality and put users first.
  • Guide and educate Product Owners and key stakeholders on Scrum and Agile principles to refine and prioritise product backlog for value.
  • Accountable for staff engagement, recruitment, compensation, performance management, coaching and development.
  • Champion and model the Bank’s behavioural competencies and corporate behaviours, ensuring adherence within the team(s).

Digital Workplace Capability

As part of the Digital Workplace Capability, the technologies and services in scope include, but may change: M365 and M365 Copilot – M365 platform, Office 365, Teams, SharePoint, Copilot and wider 365 suite; Smart IT, Workplace Applications and NSSR – workplace applications, SaaS platforms, SMART IT, smart building technologies and non‑standard software; Audio‑Visual and IT Integration – AV and hybrid meeting technologies (including collaboration platforms).

During the time the DW Product Owner is on maternity leave, additional responsibilities include:

  • Accountable for the overall vision for the capability area.
  • Accountable for business cases, value‑on‑investment reports and business relationship management for the capability.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, teams and users to produce and own a portfolio roadmap aligned with the overall technology roadmap and supported status ambitions.
  • Communicate and promote the roadmap within scrum teams and business areas.
  • Coordinate and prioritise high‑level backlogs; calculate, update, present and justify release value to key stakeholders; drive uncompromised product quality.
  • Coordinate vision, roadmap and backlogs with other department capability areas.
  • Ongoing review and monitoring that the solution meets user group needs and ensures adoption of products in production.
  • Act as an agent of change across the organisation and demonstrate commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Develop strong internal networks and build trusted relationships to enable change across the Bank.

Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications

  • Strong judgement at leadership level and track record of solution‑orientation and problem‑solving.
  • Experienced manager of people, finance, processes and systems.
  • Proven ability to influence and work well with others, harnessing cooperation of peers across departments.
  • Political awareness and diplomatic skills to influence a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Team player able to manage through others in a matrix and collegiate style.
  • Excellent active listening and communication skills in English across all levels.
  • Experience in a complex multinational, multi‑team, Agile‑at‑scale development environment.
  • Agile practitioner certification (e.g., PMI-ACP) or equivalent.
  • Experience running maintenance and support teams in line with Agile principles.
  • Ability to command respect and create a sense of community among peers and stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of planning, monitoring and controlling support, maintenance and development techniques.
  • Exceptional communication, organisation and time‑management skills.
  • Ability to coach the internal team to reach highest potential using best practices.
  • Broad understanding of various business areas and engagement with diverse business users.
  • Balance long‑term strategic IT goals with evolving Bank requirements and organisational changes.
